I didn't get a chance to check e-mail until this morning. . .but. . wow. .. Thank you, everyone, for all of the input, and Rex for the information from the entry. It is an odd entry for a Roman Catholic church, isn't it? In some ways? But they can't be my people, so that settles that. As to other things mentioned: my Alexander and Catherine were in Port Macquarie from 1841-ish to 1845-ish. There was apparently a visiting RC priest at some point, but no church, so their children's births are recorded Parramatta/St. James. I am looking for their marriage. As I said, this was a long shot. Alexander was French and a RAINE (I saw no other MAINEs and could not find it as a surname, so was hoping for a misspellng - by most accounts, Alex must have had quite an accent to his English). Catherine was Irish and used mostly GIBLIN, but also DEVLIN and COTTON. I'm running out of ideas for finding their marriage, perhaps starting to grasp at straws, and may have to accept the fact that they never took that step (or recorded it), despite being RC. As to copyright and the church -- I once posted to New Zealand list a series of entries from a never-copyrighted work in which a family historian had recorded very early church entries. I got e-mail by way of someone from the priest/archivist (who got wind of it I don't know how), telling me I should cease and desist. I pointed out that I was taking the entries from elsewhere. Correct or not, he was adamant on the fact that the church still held copyright. The witnesses were Batholomew Shea and Honora Shea and the minister's name was H G Gregory. There is a notation at the bottom of the page which says "Witnessed all the above signatures and marks J Grant of Sydney".
