    2. Frances Kenney
    3. Hi I noticed that some of you were looking for old church records. Rather than spend a fortune using BDM's or transcription agents for these records - The State Library has them on the shelf and for about a $1-00 you can get a copy of the whole page of the register or just the entry you want. I guess if they have them available, other institutions would also have them on film. SAG in Kent St Sydney have them but won't let you make a copy. You could also trty the LDS as they often have these films as well. While I am on this subject. All Tasmanian Registers are available at the State Library and the same applies. Just load the film on the printer and get full copies of the entries which in the case of births, actually has the signature of the person registering the birth. Hope this helps Frances

    1. RE: [NORCO] Marriage St. Mary's
    2. Ezitree
    3. Hello Kim, The registration of marriages in NSW commenced in 1856 and the records before that time are only from the churches and contain far less detail than the civil record. The entry for Alexander Maine and Catherine Dolan both of Sydney shows the marriage at St Mary's Church Sydney on 7 September 1843. The witnesses were Batholomew Shea and Honora Shea and the minister's name was H G Gregory. There is a notation at the bottom of the page which says "Witnessed all the above signatures and marks J Grant of Sydney". Mr Grant appears as the witness to several other marriages at the time so he may have been a sexton. Alexander Maine is not shown as a communicant of the church whilst Catherine did not sign her name, only gave put a mark. Bartholomew was the only person to sign his name besides the minister. Before buying certificates from the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages, you may care to know that many researchers are now availing themselves of one of three transcription services when getting details from the civil registration in NSW of births to 1905 and marriages and deaths to 1945. This is because they are cheaper - $A16 against $A24, the transcribers are family historians and are more likely to notice small nuances in the records, the turn around is much faster (usually 3 to 4 days) and you can order the transcriptions by email. The websites of these are: www.marbract.com.au, www.joymurrin.com.au, home.primus.com.au/lturtle/. I personally use Marbract Services and found them to be quite satisfactory. In one case, I ordered a transcription for a person who had previously ordered one through them and they put me in touch with that person. I guess that the other two transcribers would do the same as well. Does anyone have easy access to microfilm for NSW marriages? I have found a marriage in 1843 for Alexander MAINE to a Catherine DOLAN in the online index. It is a long shot for me, so I thought I would ask the list before I spent my $26 plus currency conversion cost. Thanks so much! 3. I have recently discovered that my convict ancestor Henry BATTERSON worked for William Henry CHAPMAN of Macleay River for a period of time around 1847/48 and possibly longer. I would love to hear from anyone connected to or researching William Chapman, with a hope to filling in some of the details on Henry Batterson's life. Of particular interest would be the properties owned by W H Chapman and the types of industry he was involved in. Regards, Jenny in Brisbane Find local movie times and trailers on Yahoo! 2. Thank you to Pam & Hazel for your replies. I'm not sure the Grafton Harmans are related to mine but it was worth a try. My Harmans came from Melbourn in Cambridgeshire. Three of the brothers went to Sydney in 1854, followed by their mother, father and younger siblings in 1854. The eldest son and his wife went to Port Fairy in Victoria. Sometime after 1854 but before 1860, the remainder of the family went to Port Fairy also. I am trying to fill the gaps between the time they arrived in Sydney and then moved to Port Fairy. I thought the Grafton Harmans may have be linked as the eldest son's wife Susan REED had a sister Sybill who settled in Ulmarra. She married John REVELL. On this I thought they may have headed to family in that area. Thanks again for your help Kind Regards Merron

    2. Janice Doughty
    3. Good morning Listers, Still working on the HAMPSON family and with the kind assistance of many on the List, it is turning out to be a good yarn indeed. Still trying to find out what ship the HAMPSON family arrived on from the USA. I believe however, the year would be IN 1854, between the birth of Mary Ann in the US in 1853 and the birth of Thomas in N.S.W. around Sept in 1854. The story goes so far for the line of the rellie I am assisting with this research:- Edward and Mary HAMPSON, (nee Harrison) from Ashton Under Lyne, Lancaster England, their son:- Wright Harrison HAMPSON, born 1848 Salem Mass, married Isabella Emmeline Reid at Port Macquarie in 1870 (Isabella being the daughter of Edward and Ann Reid of Port Macquarie), their son:- Arthur William HAMPSON born at Tamworth in 1874, married Caroline E Hollis at Cootamundra in 1899, their daughter:- Daphne E. HAMPSON born in Sydney in 1905, married Howard Edgar BOLTON in 1928. (The Bolton family story is another great Saga of intrigue and mystery). I am hoping someone can throw some light on Isabella Emmeline Reid. I have found she is the daughter of Edward and Ann Reid. I can find that this couple had two sons, Charles born 1855 and James born 1862, however I am unable to find the birth of Isabella. She married Wright Harrison HAMPSON in 1870, and guessing she may have been around 18, she may have been born circa 1852. I also, am unable to find a marriage for her parents, which makes me think they could have been immigrants and Isabella was born not in Australia. Any assistance with solving this new mystery would be very much appreciated. Hoping someone has the answer. Regards, Janice Belrose - Sydney
