    3. Does anyone have any stories and/or information on the Griffiths family from Mountain Top Dorrigo. They have been dairy farmers there since the early 1930's. I have their family tree done but now want some stories about them. My husband Andrew Griffiths was three when Harold Griffiths bought the farm from Reg Griffiths who worked it with David Thomas Griffiths and Andrew Griffiths (Davids father) being the one who bought the farm. Also I am looking for any information on Malcolm Stewart Scott Brown and his family, who were dairy farmers in Kalang, Bellingen. Thank you Katrina Griffiths

    3. Dear Yvonne, Noticed that you were looking for mentions of an Ezekiel Jackson. We guess that you have done a Google search in Australia for the specific name and may have noticed that an Ezekiel Jackson gets a mention in one of our newspaper indexes. But in case you haven't here are the details (we of course don't know if he is the same Ezekiel Jackson you are researching).... Manning River News newspaper index 1865-1873 Jackson Ezekiel Legal Port Macquarie Quarter Sessions 11 Oct 1873 2.3 (page 2 column 3) The text reads of the article in the newspaper reads... Port Macquarie Quarter Sessions Tuesday September, 30, 1873. Ezekiel Jackson Charged with stealing a £5 note from a man named Sweeney, at Kempsey. Verdict, guilty, sentenced to eight months' imprisonment in Port Macquarie gaol. Prisoner was defended by Mr. Dease. 1. Michael Murray and Ellen Jackson
    2. Yvonne
    3. G'day Everyone, This is my first time on this list and I was hoping someone could help me find whatever happened to my ancestor Michael Murray and his daughter Ellen Jackson (nee Murray). Michael Murray b.Kilcork, Ireland in 1816 - m: Catherine McGovern in England 1836. The family, 2 adults & 4 children, arrived in Sydney on the 'Elizabeth' as assisted immigrants in 1844. His daughter Catherine and his wife, Catherine both drowned near Summer Island on the Macleay River in 1865. His youngest daughter, Ellen m: my g.grandfather, Ezekiel Jackson in 1866, Macleay River, but we have no further records of him after that. We have checked almost every Michael Murray on the NSWBDM without success (just a lot of copies of transcriptions), checked as many cemeteries as possible for a headstone or record without any luck. The only other explanation is that maybe he returned to England after the loss of his wife and daughter, Catherine. His other daughter, my g.grandmother, Ellen Jackson was last heard of when she gave birth to triplets at Skillion Flat, Macleay River, in 1875. There was a mention of a Coroners' report in the Maitland Mercury in June 1875, on two of the infants, but no actual report was found as the records somehow have not survived. Ellen also disappeared from records from that year, and again, she has not been found on the NSWBMD, nor was her third child. Just as a footnote, her husband, Ezekiel disappeared as well, but ended up back in Maine, USA, where he remarried in 1895 stating he was a widow. At this rate I should be able to build myself a fort with the amount of brick walls I keep running into. If anyone has a suggestion to where I can go from here, I would very much appreciate it. Regards, Yvonne PMcQ

    1. Alexander and Mary BROCK
    2. Margery W Phair
    3. Alexander and Mary (nee CUMMINS) BROCK were married at St Mary's RC Church, Sydney in 1837, they had numerous children (NSW BDM shows some duplicated entries) including Elizabeth born 1847 (no district shown) and it seems that they moved to the north coast. A Mary BROCK died aged 42, at Macleay River in 1856. I may have found Elizabeth BROCK who was "adopted" by Rosanna ROBINSON in Grafton (according to Elizabeth's marriage certificate). I am wondering what happened to Alexander and the other children and am also wondering whether Alexander could have been called Allan as I have found references to an Allan BROCK in the Kempsey district, in NSW BDM. If Elizabeth BROCK wasn't the daughter of Alexander and Mary, then who were her parents? I would appreciate any ideas. With thanks, Margery

    1. Question re Written Marriage Consent
    2. Jan Mumford
    3. Dear All I have just received a copy of a marriage that took place on 21/6/1911 at the Church of St John the Divine, Taree. There are notes at the bottom that state that the written consent for the marriage, in this case for both the bride and groom was given, by his father and her guardian. My question is what would have happened to the written consents? Would they have been kept by the bride and groom? Would they be held by the minister in his records at the church? Or would the consents be forwarded to BDM as part of the legal/civic requirement? If anyone knows the answer I would love to hear it. Getting a copy of the letters would be even better of course if that is possible. Regards, Jan Mumford (nee Carpenter)

    1. Hartleys at Coffs Harbour
    2. Linda Combe
    3. I am researching a branch of my Hartley family who moved to the North Coast around 1912. Henry Hartley and his wife Elizabeth (nee Mather) came from Yorkshire around 1882 to Leichhardt with their sons John Henry Hartley and Edwin Mather Hartley & perhaps a daughter Elizabeth. John Henry Hartley married Mary E Pearson in Leichhardt in 1905 and had the following chn: Henry John b. 1906 Leichhardt may have married Jean Betty Macauley in Auburn in 1943 Charles Edwin b. 1910 Leichhardt married Ivy May Stanlan in Coffs harbour in 1940 Muriel b. 1912 Bellingen married Albert Richard Hooton in Parramatta in 1934 Elva Ellen b. 1913 Bellingen married Horace Alan Watt in Coffs Harbour in 1937 Nellie Ruthetta b. 1917 Bellingen married Herbert A. Shephard in Coffs Harbour in 1937. Henry Hartley was the brother of my great great grandfather Samuel Hartley. Samuel Hartley's son Frederick came to Australia with his family including my grandmother Susannah in 1907. It is only by the greatest co-incidence that I have become aware of the existence of Henry's family on the North Coast as for some reason this was not family knowledge. All we have is a letter from "cousin" Edwin on active service in WW1 in Egypt in 1916 to my grandmother's sister Emily. I would really like to find out more about this branch and also pass on all my research on our Hartleys stretching back into the 1700s in England. He re-married (1934 Paramatta NSW) Daphne Gertrude KEOUGH b.about 1911. Families are known from these marriages in which mine came from the Lismore region (Alfred George Scott DOONER).
