I have the transcription of the death certificate of James MARK. It states that he was buried on 4 January 1883 in the Presbyterian section of the Armidale cemetery. Can anybody help me out with the transcription of the head stone (if it exists)? A photo would be really good and I would, of course, be happy to pay for it and postage. The undertaker is listed as Harper Brothers. Do they still exist and would they have records going back to then? I also believe that his daughter, Mary A B MacKay, (wife of Rainey) was buried at Enmore near Uralla in 1890. Could anybody help me out with information on this? Many thanks in advance Elizabeth Leicester, UK
Cindy, My ancestors Joseph and Alice ALLEN held a licence for the Settlers Arms corner of Lord and Brown Streets from 1855 to Joseph's death in 1858. Alice was granted the licence in 1860. This hotel was replaced by the Courthouse Hotel later in the 1800's. Joseph was a convict from Hertfordshire and Alice ne McNally a daughter of a convict from Ireland. Joseph was buried in Dungog cemetery where there still exists a readable headstone. Hi, I am looking for information on a John Williams who came from England in 1876. He was at that stage in the army. Apparently, when he retired from the army, he became a hotel owner in Armidale. I have always been told it was the Tattersalls Hotel. He would have been the proprietor around about the 1900's. However I know he died around that time and wondered whether the story was confused and if it was his wife Bridgette, who remarried, who helped run the hotel. Maybe it was another hotel in the Armidale area. Can anyone help me with information on this. Evon Williams Lemon Tree Passage Australia

Is anyone out there researching the above names. I am interested in Edward Sackville Edwards Bostobrick 1860 onwards and Patrick Mc Carthy who lived in Hillgrove and areas east to Dorrigo also 1860 onward. John Hopkins/Hopkinson also lived around Hillgrove at this time. With thanks Barry Sinclair.
Bob - A Connor/O'Connor family moved from Bemboka to Crystal Creek about 1900. The father Edward O'Connor and family had the PO there until about 1916. The wife was Elizabeth Alcock and children were Elizabeth Catherine (Kate), Rachel G m Akers, Josephine m Jack Kenny, Isabella T m Bill Guinea, Rosebella m Jim McDonald, Margaret m Sr M Alphonsus, Edna St M Edmund, Mary Jane m Jim Byrne, Augustine ?, Thomas m Alouise Minmaw, William, Esmonde m Florence Holland. I doubt if there is a connection because the names are different and they came from South Coast. Still it might help you sort out the families of the same name in Mur'bah area. When I was doing this research for the Crystal Creek school centenary I was told that the O'Connor family in Mur'bah who had a carrying business if my memory serves me rightly were not related to the Crystal Creek ones. There is also a Palmer family in the area. Lesley Palmer wife of Glen Clark lives on Wommin Bay Rd and her mother lives at South Tweed heads. It is probably drawing a long bow but it is just possible there is a connection. Good luck with your research. Feel free to contact me if you want more info. Alice Erickson researching Wark/Stewart in Coonabarabran area and Erickson/Slyney in Taree area.

G'day Bob, Here is an excerpt from MACLEAN The First Fifty Years 1862-1912 by E. H. McSwan. Available from the Maclean District Historical Society, PO Box 257, Maclean NSW 2463. ISBN 0 909323 12 7 WILLIAM O'CONNOR William O'Connor is best remembered for the store he kept for about 35 years on the corner of River and John Streets, which he opened and called Crown General Store. He came from Ireland as a young immigrant and first worked for McAulay & McLeod, the Ashby butchers, for whom he delivered meat and is listed as a boatman in the 1878-9 Post Office Directory. Next he tried his hand at doing contract bush work briefly, and dealing in horses and cattle. For a short time also before Michael Rush went to Grafton O'Connor worked for him and evidently decided that this was more to his liking as he started his own business and ran it successfully until he left Maclean for Sydney c. 1920. (DE 5 May 1929) As a sideline he worked as a valuator, Stock and Station Agent and Auctioneer for which he was licensed in 1905. In his younger days he was a rower of some note, especially in single sculls in the heavier boat as he was of fine physique and very strong. He married in Maclean in 1855 to Mary Ann Noonan and they experienced the sadness of losing several daughters in infancy. Two others survived and were known as Nella and Mamie, and sons Thomas and Bebe. William O'Connor was an alderman for 17 years and Chairman of the Works Committee. He encouraged and supported the building of the Roman Catholic for which he was a trustee and bondsman. The Hibernian Society was another interest and he assisted with the running of the sports events which were a feature of both the Hibernian and Caledonian Societies. The main if not the first home of the family was on the corner of Stanley and Grafton Streets and what is now called Connor's Lane, but originally called O'Connor's after them. He advised it to let in May of 1919, which was probably the time they went to Sydney. He opened a grocery shop in Sydney although he was then aged 72, and conducted it until his death in 1929. Hope this fills in a few gaps for you Bob.
