    1. Hughes + others Richmond River
    2. Sherrie Blackman
    3. Hi everyone, Hoping that someone on the list might be able to help me with my HUGHES family. I'm trying to establish whether the following RICHARD HUGHES is my Richard Hughes: I have a Mrs Connie NIND, who's father was Richard HUGHES. Richard HUGHES & his 3 sons, built the Star Court Picture Theatre in Alstonville NSW, which opened in 1915. Mrs Nind attended the first and last screenings at the Star Court, the last being in 1980. The HUGHES family also built the following: Lismore Base Hospital T & G Building the former National Bank in Woodlark St (Lismore?) The Ryan & Royal Hotels Methodist Church in Ballina Hotel Grand in Coolangatta St Andrew's Church - built additions to the church in 1913 I don't know who this Richard HUGHES was married to, or his birth/death date. Does anyone have any history on the above buildings that mentions the Hughes family? It's possible that this Richard Hughes is a descendant of our family. What we do know about our Richard HUGHES: Richard was born in Kildare, Ireland in 1822 and he sailed to Tasmania (year?) and in March 1843 sailed from Tasmania to Sydney aboard 'The Water Lily'. In October 1843, Richard HUGHES married Eliza Silke EVANS. They had 13 children and also settled in the Richmond River area of NSW. Associated family names: SJOSTROM - HORSEMAN - SHARPE - EXTON - TOWNER - TICEHUSRT - SOMMERVILLE - CUMMING - WRIGHT - SAVILLE - SCHOFIELD - ROBERTS - PARSONS - CAMERON - HOOPER - TRIMBLE - HILL - RODGERS. Would love to hear from anyone researching these names. Kind regards, Sherrie Blackman. Sydney.

One was James, manager of the Oxide works here (Muston's) in 1924, but am sure there were many before that. Working at the Society today, so will give a brief outline of them for you. It grew to immense size particularly on the alluvial flats of the lower river on what is now cleared farm land. Large quantities were obtained and rafted to the entrance and shipped in the surf. Mr E H F Swain, then a district forester and late Commissioner of Forests, in a Bulletin issued in 1912 wrote "it is recorded of one growing between Fernmount and Raleigh that 39,000 superficial feet of timber were obtained by the saw and that another 5,000 superficial feet twelve or so years later were axe chopped out of the limbs by the succeeding settlers. Of another on what is now Connell's farm, near Fernmount, it is recorded that a family named Woods lived in the roofed over spurs for two years."

    2. Paul Hanly
    3. Hi all, Just a few reminders: 1. The Norco list is hosted by Rootsweb http://www.rootsweb.com/ Rootsweb has a wide range of genealogical resources available free. 2. The archives of the Norco list are searchable at http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Just type "AUS-NSW-NORCO-L" (without the " marks) and you will be taken to the search page. If you type in another valid list name you can search that list instead. 3. You can also search the Norco list (and other NSW lists) from http://resources.rootsweb.com/world/Australia/NewSouthWales/ but only the bottom group of searches seem to work properly, at least for Norco. You can also search Norco from the Welcome page of Bellingen Gen Web www.rootsweb.com/~nswbelli/ 4. Rootsweb's Australian web sites, many genealogy links and email lists for all states can be found through http://resources.rootsweb.com/world/Australia.html and the State sites linked from there. 5. Bellingen Gen Web www.rootsweb.com/~nswbelli/ is associated with the Norco list and in particular the books, links, archives and settlers pages and database may be of assistance for enquiries about NSW North coast. If you have something about Bellingen district you would like to submit please email [email protected] 6. Please post your interests every 2 or 3 months or so for the benefit of new subscribers to the list. They may have that information you are looking for, but be too shy to post! New listers should search the archives as the information you are after may have been posted months ago by someone who is no longer on the list!! 7. It helps if you put the Surname, First name; Place; Year to Year in the message subject as that makes it very easy to see whether messages in the archives are relevant to you. 8. Spread the word about Norco when replying to messages on other lists. In Outlook Express 5 You can use Tools>Options>Signatures and add a signature like the one below, then use Insert>Signature on each message. 9. Keep up the goodness by helping answer queries and being nice to one another, particularly those whose questions may indicate that they have little experience, or have no experience in working with microfiche, indexes, bureaucracies, etc. 10. Procedures for subscribing and unsubscribing are below my name. 11. Can you help with transcribing or scanning an index to a North Coast book? See www.rootsweb.com/~nswbelli/transcribe.html The NSW North Coast Book Indexing Project has about 20 book indexes on line. They can be searched from the yellow search box on the Welcome page or individually. 12. There is all the information you could want on Norco at www.rootsweb.com/~nswbelli/norco.html Kind regards to all Paul Hanly Rhodes, Sydney, Australia Coordinator Bellingen Gen Web www.rootsweb.com/~nswbelli/ [email protected] North Coast NSW mail list A mailing list for North Coast NSW has been established. BUT - what I need most of all is: should I list the women by their MAIDEN names with a cross reference to their married name. I have these all in a data base with cross references galore, and, yes the family name is first with a , after it so that I can easily sort them. Sort by name and then by birth date so it might be a bit easier to follow the correct family. This how my listing is presently: family name, given name, son of father & mother, fathers family names, mother's family names, marriage to & date, birth date, death date location in the cemetery. Should also say that I include their place of b & d if I have it. I have a step-gt-grandfather, William Henry Woodward, born in Lechlade Gloucs, who came out here in the 1890's as a private in the RMLI. He deserted in 1899 and was never heard from again. His father was Henry and there was a William Woodward died at Taree in 1907 whose father was Henry. I am curious to find out if there were one and the same person! 1. REID: sawmillers Grafton
    2. Davis, Leith (FORESTRY)
    3. I work for ForestrySA, and we have a small but wonderful collection of rare books from the commencement of the original department back in the 1880s - the collection is at our Mt Gambier office. When I was at Mt Gambier the other day I was looking at a magnificent 6 volume >100 year old set of "The Flora of NSW Forests", found a reference to a John Reid, sawmiller of South Grafton (his opinion on the virtues of turpentine!) (The same section also quoted the opinions of Joe Laurie, of Laurieton, my gg grandfather, that made me a bit of a heroine around the Forestry office for all of a few minutes). My grandmother's sister Wilhelmina Hoffman (my dearly loved Aunty Bill) married a John Royal Reid in the 1920s on the south coast of NSW, he was a sawmiller (like the rest of my family) who became very successful in the area. My grandmother had recently married Manning Davis, originally from the North Coast, and his sister, Leith Davis, had married Alfred Charleston from Grafton so my grandmother's sister would have had North Coast connections, and now I'm wondering if Uncle Jack was part of the great North Coast-South Coast migration that I'm discovering in my family as I dig further. Does anyone know anything of John Reid, sawmiller in the late 1800s in Grafton, or of his family? Leith Davis in but not of Adelaide PS: I also have a book on loan from the ForestrySA library, a history of the NSW Forestry Commission. Its very heavily oriented toward the north coast, and has lots of names (foresters, some sawmillers and timber workers) and history of forest reserves etc. I will make an index for the Bellinger site, but in the meantime am happy to look up for anyone. -----Original Message----- From: Paul Hanly [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, 14 April 2000 0:51 To: [email protected] Subject: Red Cedar - Our Heritage indexed on Bellingen Gen Web With thanks to Vicki Morrison, "Red Cedar - Our Heritage" has had its index transcribed and the index is on the Bellingen Gen Web www.rootsweb.com/~nswbelli/ site. 1. Names on Cloth at Anglican Church Ballina
    2. Glenda Manwaring
    3. St Mary's Anglican Church in Ballina has in its possession a heavy white linen cloth which has been embroidered in white with six hundred names and/or initials. The names are on squares (5.5x5.5 inches), a name on each side and 1 in the middle. The cloth measures approx 70x86 inches. The square have been hemstiched in froups of four and joined together. The cloth appears to be handmade. It is not known for what purpose the cloth was made. BUT we would like to be able to find out. Though there is a lot of initials, just maybe someone will recognise a name and the purpose of the cloth. One of the names has the date 9.9.09. (Thanks to Marie Hart for extracting the names) Perhaps SKS could also give me an address for (if there is one) the Anglican Historical Centre.
