Hello to all on this new Mail list. I seek some historical information on "Bald Blair" near Armidale. The reason I seek is that I descend from the Athertons of Atherton Tablelands etc in Queensland. According to the family history the Athertons left Blackrod, Lancashire in 1844 and left ship "Briton" in Newcastle after a short stop at Sydney. Appears they were a family of some wealth as arrived at "Bald Blair", but how and when they acquired and arrived is not that clear, as nothing is said in the book about the 1844-1856 years. 1856 a couple of the sons (James and John) overlanded sheep to a new property "Rosewood" near Mt Morgan, Qld. It would appear the rest of the family followed shortly after. The family then owned various properties around Mareeba, Mackay, Clifton etc. Along with others started the Plane Creek Sugar Mill in Sarina (now owned by CSR). The information I seek is. a.. Where is Bald Blair exactly? b.. Is there any history as to ownership around the 1850's? c.. Is there any local history in regards to the Atherton's? I am quite to supply the small amount of detail I have re the family in Armidale thus we may eventually get a history of the Atherton family in New South Wales.
