Was about to click on record search when 'find of the month' caught my eye http://naa.gov.au/about_us/find-of-month/previous_finds.html Are some wonderful twidderly bits here ............... I loved the one about the 3yo who buried his fathers war service medal in the garden in the hope of growing a poppy :-)) Enjoy ! Hi everyone, I am interested in any information on a John Shepherd and his wife Sarah Courtenay. They had a child Sarah in 1849 in Armidale. John is listed on her baptism certificate as a superintendant. (9 Feb 850) Their abode was Kangarro Hills (which i think now is Wongabinda) and the family thinks he had a landholding at tilbuster. The family thinks John was drowned in a creek but although there is difficulty in finding any death certificate at this stage, I am not sure of this. Cheers! Caroline Chapman

Hi listers, I am new to this list and would appreciate any info listers can give me on the following item in the Wellington,NZ 'Evening Post' on 6 April 1889: 'News has been received of the death of Mr.Henry VALLER,traveling mining agent, late of Wellington, which occurred last month at the tin mining claim known as the Hell-Hole in New England,NSW.It appears that while Mr.Valler was traveling at night on horseback, from .Vegetable to Mt Mitchell, his horse fell into an old shaft on the claim named, the unfortunate rider being killed almost instantaneously.Deceased leaves a widow and child in Brisbane who, it is satisfactory to learn are well provided for.' Some years back, during a visit to Sydney I did a search of the Glen innes Examiner paper but found no reference to his death. Also checked probate records for Queensland and NSW but nothing found.(because of time constraints the check was not as thorough as i would have liked so I may have missed something). As I am not familiar with Australian genealogy resources any suggestions or info.would be greatly appreciated.Maybe coroners inquests might turn up something if they are available? Many thanks.Trev.Valler,Warkworth,New Zealand.
Thanks to Jenny, Helen, Terry and Rose-Marie from this list for their help and suggestions in finding the death certificate of John Morrison drowned 2nd April 1890. Will be phoning the Tamworth court house next week to ask what information I would likely to obtain if I purchased 12375/1890 unknown, male, age unknown, Tamworth death certificate. Does any-one know if the Tamworth library has the it's old newspapers on microfilm? If so what years do they cover? Thanking you all for your help. Rose Try the Narrabri and District Historical Society I called in to Narrabri Museum on the off chance one day when passing thru narrabri and found a treasure trove of information. see http://www.narrabri.nsw.gov.au/files/1777/File/Museum_Brochure_2004.pdf Note that the society have a card file and this is not just BDM but also has the little things that bring history to life like poems about local identities and places. Of course I did not have any records with me but the very helpful volunteer looked up a person for me who's death was registered in Narrabri and found that he had an inn and store in a locality north of narrabri, he played the fiddle and that he was robbed by a bushranger and then joined the trooper in chasing the bushranger. Also that after his death The Bank of NSW register of accounts (with signatures of customers) shows his account was taken over by his wife then son (who's birth or marriage or death is not registered in NSW or Qld.) Plus she gave me the cemetery location of his grave and the bad news that the methodist(?) church from where he was buried bunt down taking the church registers with it. I think they have copies of the other church registers in the museum(?) The Gaol is a brilliant place for archives the day was hot outside but the cell which houses the collection was quite temperate. A thought : was the transcription correct of the headstone for date of death?? State records has a few deceased estate files for John Morrisons in the 1880s and 1890s. Found in the Narrabri Cemetery the headstone and monumental inscription of John MORRISON drowned 2nd April 1890 Purchased a transcription of death 1890/2647 Morrison John, father John, mother Annie, place Balmain NSW. This is the only death registered for a John Morrison in 1890 and it is not the correct person. Asked the online librarian at the Mitchell Library if they could find any information (newspaper articles or death notice) on this drowning but sadly they could find nothing. A friend did go to the archives for me and looked for an inquest. (this friend is no longer able to research for me) Found one that could fit the bill : 18 April Woolomol, man name unknown about 50. Body found Peel River Tamworth 13 April. Drowned. Then it had JGP 19.4.90 RIP 29.4.90 No pages of the inquest exist unfortunately. It is only indexes. Questions Would a death be registered if and when this body been identified? Could a death be registered with-out a body? If so, how long after the event could this be done? Wait of how long? Help would be appreciated Rose Morrison

Hi Listers, Can anyone help with information on the family of Frank and Letitia Bowden of Walcha? I am particularly interested in anything on their son Raymond, who represented Australia with the 1926 Wallabies Rugby Union squad. I believe Raymond spent several years in Newcastle. I am also interested in details of other family members. Any help gratefully appreciated, Maureen.
Does anyone on the list have any GEIKIE family? I am looking for the parents or siblings of the following: Nugent Broun Colstoun GEIKIE born in 1919 in Sandgate, Qld. He married an Olga Marie Christina CLARKE in 1947 in Woollahra, NSW and died in 1982 in Hunters Hill, NSW. In his war records he gives his next of kin as William. The only other GEIKIEs I have found are: Eric Murdoch GEIKIE born 1874 in Bathurst to Alexander Constable GEIKIE and Elizabeth. Eric married an Ethel E HUME in 1904 in Boorowa and died in 1932 in Hamilton. They had a son, Archibald Hume GEIKIE I have also found other GEIKIEs in Sydney from 1821 onwards. These people seem to be related to my BROUN and HUME families - I just can't find the connection. Thanks for any help you can give Charlotte Broun

Hi Pauline So would I ! ............ The WHACKETT I am interested in was born George Keith 1901 , Uralla , eldest child of Thomas & Ada WHACKETT nee ADAMS He married Enid May FOWLER 1931 in Armidale I suspect he changed his surname possibly soon after he married ??. Her brother was involved in something abit shonky . I havent been able to find out what yet . But I do know he certainly changed his whole name c 1929/30 and moved to Qld c 1931 Enids mother Vera May LANE late FOWLER, nee HITTMAN died in Armidale 28 Apr 1932 Her 2nd husband was a Henry LANE , who had a bakers shop in Armidale. Dunno what happened to him after Vera died I've run out of clues and stones to look under ( re leaving no stone unturned) Bye MargM New England List Admin
Ooops, sorry. I meant to say Adela Adams/Whackett married Duncan Cameron in 1920, not 1900, but the caption does state 1900. Pauline
This family appears a hard nut to crack. I have a William Whackett, (Wackett), born 1868 in Armidale, died 1917, marrying Adela AF Adams in Uralla 1900. William's parents were Thomas and Amelia BOND. They married 1863 in Armidale. Thomas died 1901 at Armidale and Amelia died 1932, aged 85. It appears Thomas and Amelia had 6 children under the name of Wackett, and 3 under the name of Whackett. Adela then married Duncan Cameron in 1900 at Uralla. I have a photo of Duncan and Adela on their wedding day which is featured in "Brandscheid's Vine" but the caption underneath the photo states "Duncan Cameron and Sarah Cameron (nee Whackett) 1900", which makes it very confusing! As for George, he may have married Jane Chapman both in Armidale (660/1903) and again in Ballina (689/1903), under the name of Whackett. I'd love someone to fill in the gaps. Cheers, Pauline
I have recorded in my database: Thomas Whackett's brother John (1880-1955). John WHACKETT married Betsy BULLEN, in Uralla 1901. Of particular interest is their daughter Doris Irene WHACKETT, she married James Thomas LUXFORD, 1926 Tingha. Regards Alan
