    1. [NE] Armidale Cemetery - David PAYNE 1934
    2. Jan Glasby
    3. Hi all, Does anyone have access to the Armidale cemetery records? I've just found out that David PAYNE, born 1865 Patrick's Plains, son of John PAYNE and Sarah MORRIS (nee WATERS) died in Armidale in 1934. I'm after a death date so I can check the newspapers for a death notice. In the 1903 electoral rolls he was a cab-driver living in Singleton with his wife, Elizabeth, and mother. Cheers Jan

    2. Paul Robinson
    3. Hi Listers, I am looking for information about the "Moor Creek Tragedy" as reported in the Tamworth Observer, Wendesday, September 5 1888 and subsequently. Briefly the matter relates to the murder/manslaughter of Patrick John KEENAHAN by Arthur COULTON. Coulton accused Keenahan of being the father of the child of Elizabeth Coulton - Arthur's sister. Keenahan was married to their mother Margaret Coulton (Nee SHORT) at the time. Keenhan was the Landlord of the Australian Arms Hotel at Moor Creek. I would be interested to hear from anyone who knows anything about this case, especially regarding the subsequent fate of the various players. 3. Greetings to the :-)ing Administrator and those on this list. This is my "adopted area". From 1943-46 I was a PMG Technician on the "Armidale Relief". That took me to Guyra in mid winter and Walgett in mid summer and all those other places in between. I knew lots of techs, linies and, postal staff, switchies (married one from Glen Innes). Lovely memories of pubs, boarding houses, school teachers etc, which I am happy to share. Good luck, and as the Administrator says, "Don't be shy!" -- Frank Cardiff East Gosford NSW 2250 Australia A genealogist may leave his wife - but he'll go back in time.

    3. Hi Kerrie, He was not listed in the books and I could not find him on the Roll of Honor at the AWM. I found only 2 Shumacks on the Roll of Honor. I will include them here for you in case there is a connection SHUMACK, Pte. Bert, 3721. 56th Bn. Australian Inf. 9th Sept., 1918. Age 20. Nephew and adopted son of Richard J. and Mary Ann Shumack, of Dark Corner, New South Wales. IV. E. 10. Date of Death: 09/09/1918 SHUMACK, Pte. Henry, 2877. 36th Bn. Australian Inf. Killed in action 16th July, 1917. Age 42. Son of William and Jane Shumack; husband of Florence E. Shumack, of Eriban St., Gilgandra, New South Wales. Native of Coonamble, New South Wales. II. C. 30. Date of Death: 16/07/1917 If you think either of these belong to you then follow the link below. Enter the surname and in the conflict select First World War and search. There is much more information on these two there. http://www.awm.gov.au/database/roh.asp The other search you can try is the WW1 nominal role. "The nominal roll is a single alphabetic listing of the names (approximately 324 000 entries) of members of the AIF who served overseas during the 1914-18 War". http://www.awm.gov.au/database/133.asp Perhaps there is an alternate spelling to the name you could try. Good luck with your search. I have copied this to the list because they may be many out there who do not know of these search facilities. 3. Hi All, I have "Never a Backward Step" the official book of the First 33rd battalion AIF. It lists all of the soldiers in that Battalion and their fate. The book sometimes lists next of kin as well as home towns and age on enlistment. The majority of them travelled to enlisted and train in Armidale NSW and generally came from New England and Northern NSW. The composition of the 4 companies in the battalion was generally as follows: A Company was composed of men from Armidale and Tamworth B Company was composed of men from Walcha, Uralla, Barraba, Bingara, and Manilla. C Company was composed of men from Narrabri, Moree and Inverell D company was composed of men from Glen Innes, Guyra and Tenterfield I am happy to do look-ups for anyone. If you lost track of a male family member from about 1915, it could be that they, like my grandfather, went to "do their duty". The battalion departed Australia in May 1916 aboard the HMAT Marathon. They served in France and suffered some of the heaviest casualties numbers of the war. While the loss was tragic, I am grateful to all these young men and am happy to help anyone who can claim them. 2. Isabelle Alaban
    3. Greetings all I am a new member of this list and my family passed through the NE area on travels from Maitland to Walgett. My main interests are Lewis and, Morris. Most were itinerant farm workers. Oliver Lewis b 1857 Maitland was a boundary rider and married Elizabeth Field b 1856 Windsor. They had the following children. My grandfather Henry Lewis b 1880 Philips Creek Liverpool Plains – was a shearer. He married May Morris b 1893 Narrabri and lived in Walgett until 1915 when he enlisted at Armidale in WW1. The other Lewis siblings of Henry - James b 1879 Murrurundi, Oliver b1882 Gunnedah, Reginald c b 1884 Quirindi, Isabelle b 1886 Quirindi, Albert T b 1888 Quirindi, Herbert W b 1891 Quirindi. They seemed to have disappeared. I have been unable to trace them. My G.G.G grandfather was George Morris b c 1828 in Penrith and Married Jane Lamb b 1844 Mt York in 1863 in Hartley. He was a grazier and a stockman. They are fairly well documented on other web sites but I am searching for a link to prove his father was James Morris born Warwickshire about 1763 and arrived as a convict onboard the Minorca 1801. Any help, advice or information appreciated. Isabelle
