    1. [AUS-NSW-MANNING-VALLEY] Re: Rootsweb Announcement
    2. Susie Zada
    3. Hi Rod, And I'm a member of North Coast NSW FAMILIES Past & Present! Following the panic of the Rootsweb announcement about Mailing Lists I just wanted to stop a knee-jerk reaction of START A FACEBOOK PAGE. I think the majority of Australian places Rootsweb Mailing Lists already have an equivalent Facebook page and the last thing we should be doing is create confusion with a flurry of new Facebook pages! My concern is for the large number of people who don't use Facebook and want a simple Mailing List with archives. It's easy to say they should move with the times and get on Facebook but I can understand how they feel and the difficulty of finding things from way back on Facebook pages. So far there are four options for Mailing Lists that have been suggested. So far ... 1. https://groups.io/ 2. Google Mailing Lists 3. https://www.list.org/ (Mailman GNU) 4. https://www.freelists.org/ Any ideas? I'm keen to get feedback from anyone with experience in any of those. With so many Mailing List admins looking for alternatives it would be good to get input and not start from scratch? Regards ... 1. [AUS-NSW-MANNING-VALLEY] Rootsweb Announcement
    2. Susie Zada
    3. Hi Folks, I've copied and pasted a message that came out this moring....... ==================================================================== [ROOT-LO-ANNOUN] RootsWeb Mailing Lists RootsWeb Administration rwmailinglists@ancestry.com via rootsweb.com 04:36 (1 hour ago) to rootsweb-listowners-announcements Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community. Sincerely, The RootsWeb team ======================================================= Sadly that appears to be the end of our wonderful Rootsweb Mailing Lists. Some had become more active over the last months and others really hadn't had any posts for months and sometimes for more than a year. Naturally they recommend the use of Ancestry message boards - but that requires registering with Ancestry and potentially being bombarded with Ancestry subscription messages. For those comfortable with using Facebook that is potentially another alternative - just search Facebook for your area of interest. In its heydey, Rootsweb Mailing Lists were a wonderful resource for getting help - I do hope that people remember that generosity and friendship and helps others on Facebook too. Thank you everyone for being part of a wonderful period in our past - you all contributed to the Mailing Lists and helped others - keep this spirit intact! Regards ... Susie Zada - soon to be former Rootsweb Mailing List administrator.

For example, when there was a health issue and where Mrs Lane wanted to be appointed as the sewing teacher. But heaps about his travelling from one school to the next, and building issues - his family kept on growing, and a garage when he bought a car, all very interesting. I dont think it was a requirement to submit the registers to CO or Archives. Where the schools still exist I did check with the school and the parents association - nothing on pupil lists. I got some photos. I think I exhausted research possibilities. But then Trove came along and lots more items, such as farewells. Alfred was also a poet and many appeared in the press. One thing I got for several sites were published school histories and I have also checked local histories. But not done that for some years so more might be published. I find that school web sites tend not to have much on the history of the school. Some years ago I made contact with the FHS. When I lived in Canberra I visited all the sites with my mum - their daughter. I got old P&C meeting minutes for one school. cheers Grahame > On 2 Jun 2018, at 12:57 pm, Susie Zada <susie.zada@gmail.com> wrote: > > Hi Grahame, > > Do you know if the local school registers exist anywhere? > > It might be worth checking with the local primary school - established > in 1875 as well as asking the Manning Wallamba FHS > > http://www.coopernook-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/ > > http://manningwallambafhs.com.au/ > > Regards ... As this message will be going out to EXISTING subscribers I thought I'd send the standard welcome message to all existing subscribers that would normally go out to new subscribers. I hope it's a way of introducing myself to the current members. So Welcome and I hope you enjoy the "new" Manning Valley Mailing List And here is my "welcome" message ... The areas covered will be expanded when I have a chance but it makes sense to cover the regions covered by the Manning Wallamba Family History Society. This mailing list is not intended to replace the work done by the Manning Wallamba FHS (of which I'm a member), their Facebook Page or other options. This is for those people who sometimes prefer simple emails via Rootsweb as one of their preferred forums. Your List admin - I am NOT an expert in things relating to the Manning Valley BUT I was born at the Manning River District Hospital AND I can trace my ancestors back to 1852 in the region. I have done a lot of research but need to do heaps more. I am a great supporter of family history groups and local history groups and do not apologise for supporting them and I encourage others to do similar as they may have the information needed to break down brick walls. I am also a great believer in helping others - if members on this list can offer constructive advice or local knowledge - then let's share our combined knowledge. I no longer live in New South Wales and do a lot of voluntary work in the area where I live (Geelong, Victoria, Australia) - if I lived in the Manning Valley I would happily volunteer my time to the local society! Although I have provided some assistance to the committee with their Cemetery Indexes. My name is Susie Zada - I have a LOT of family history and local history experience and I hope to encourage assistance to all members of this list. Enjoy! Regards ... 3. Hi list The reason I am on this list is that my grandparents, Alfred Oram and Ruby Lillian Lane (nee Russell) lived at Coopernook for about eight years (1937-1945) where Alfred was the public school headmaster. I would be interested in hearing from anyone that was taught by Alfred. They retired to Sydney. Grahame
