    1. Brick Walls-falling - GOODHEW Pt3
    2. Ron Goodhew
    3. Dear Listers, This is Part Three of how my brick wall fell recently. I have told you who William Francis GOODHEW (WFG) was and how he lived most of his life in the Hunter Valley. My problem was that I couldn't find evidence of his origins until December of last year. What did I know of him before that? Well, from a combination of Family 'Myth' and his obituary, I knew he was born in Kent, England (but not exactly where). I had a birth date of 8 September 1840, but I didn't ever know where that information came from. The obit said he joined the Royal Navy and was sent to the Indian Mutiny in 1857. There was a rumour that he had deserted ship. The other things I knew I have already told you in previous parts of this story. I had attempted many times to have British records searched. I even paid for a search back in the days when the PRO was at St Catherine's. It came back negative for birth/baptism of William Francis GOODHEW. More recently I had teamed up with a lady from Hastings, whose husband's grandmother was a GOODHUGH. She had searched many parish records and had no William or Francis GOODHEW in her computer database she was compiling on her findings. When we visited Britain in 2001 I spent a day with her at the Centre for Kentish Studies, Maidstone. After much microfilm spinning, no sign of WFG. But then a single day was never going to be enough. In 2002 I noticed an entry in the Goodhew Family Genealogy Forum from a Josephine, who was looking for a GOODHEW family who included her great-grandmother, Emma. The list of siblings included Francis baptised in 1840. He was the youngest of nine. This looked mildly promising, but at this stage I was still looking for William Francis. The IGI showed this Francis baptised 10 Oct 1840, so that could be likely, since my WFG was supposedly born on 8 Sep 1840. But I didn't take this too seriously at the time. Since he had joined the Royal Navy, I had a UK email contact, who was visiting the National Archive, check for record of his enlistment, but no sign of my WFG. General confusion, but no identification. There's more ... Ron Goodhew, Adamstown. PS: Thanks to Neale Ferguson and Joe Greaves for valuable feedback.
