    3. John We published a book last year and we had to give them to the Sydney University Library and the State Parliamentary Library. We knew nothing about it until we published the book and recieved a letter from the State Library telling us what we had to do. You can check with them if you like. 1. RE: [HV] Publishing our book
    2. Kaye, John Anyone thinking of publishing a book, whether it be a family history or local history, which will be printed and sold or distributed, should be aware of three things you need to do as you get close to finalising the manuscript, i.e. once you have decided on the format, size, style, and know the number of pages: 1. Register for an ISBN See - http://www.thorpe.com.au/isbn/ 2. Request a CIP (Cataloguing in Publication number) from the National Library See - http://www.nla.gov.au/services/CIP.html 3. Allocate copies for legal deposit to the libraries required under the Copyright legislation - 4 libraries if you are in NSW See - http://www.nla.gov.au/services/ldeposit.html Most of us publish our books because we want all that work we have done to endure beyond our lifetime. We have a story that we want to tell, which we don't want to have end up in boxes in a cupboard. Publishing with an international registration via the ISBN, and on the NLA catalogue (CIP), with copies held in public libraries, will ensure that our work survives us. The rest of the books can be sold or given away to family, but it is the copies in our public libraries which will still be there in 100 years time, if someone searches the library catalogues. It may have to be pulled up out of the archives and be a bit dusty, but our work will be there for someone to build upon.
