Hi Maria, Just give the Gaol a call (02 4936 6482) and they will be able to tell you where the records are kept. I suspect at the State Archives. The Gaol is now a tourist attraction (http://www.maitlandgaol.com.au/DefaultMaitlandGaol.asp) and has staff there all days of the week. My interest comes from a John FITZSIMMONS tried at Maitland C.C. on 16 Oct 1885 for Manslaughter and was sentenced for 10 years P.S. This information comes from the SRA Goal Photograph collection. I am assuming he would have been held at Maitland, but would he have served the entire sentence there? If I have the right man, according to his daughters certificates he was dead prior to 1894. But that may have been to hide the fact he was a criminal. Before I go out and buy death certificates for John FITZSIMMONS's (which may not show me anything if his daughters had disassociated themselves from him) I thought I would try and track this guys whereabouts within the prison system. Sorry for the long description, but it gets more involved than that - as most of researchers find out :-) Any help would be much appreciated.
