    3. Hi everyone I was wondering if anyone has a Thomas Ryan married to an Elizabeth Burgan or a Mary Ann Bergan in their family tree. My paternal grandmother's mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Ryan. Elizabeth married James Smaills (various spellings of Smaills around) in 1874 at Cundletown - no parents names are listed on the marriage transcript. Elizabeth and James lived all their married life on the Manning River. Apparently Elizabeth was born either in Morpeth or Maitland depending on which certificate I look at, that is, her death certificate or the birth certificate of her first child. Elizabeth's mother is called Elizabeth Burgan on her death certificate but I have not been able to locate a marriage record on the BDM's for Thomas Ryan to Elizabeth Burgan. Also, Elizabeth's date of birth is unknown as her death certificate indicates she would have been born in 1844 but the age shown at time of marriage on the death certificate indicates she would have been born in 1846, then again she stated on her first child's birth registration that she was 20 at the time, therefore she would have been born in 1854. All together it make it very difficult to pinpoint when she would have been born. I took a punt on 1853 because there was a birth registration for an Elizabeth Ryan with father Thomas but mother Mary A and this is where I have come up with the Mary Ann Bergan. If anyone can help then it would be greatly appreciated as there appears to be a lot of Thomas Ryan's on BDM's and from the convict records available on the net a lot of men named Thomas Ryan were sent to the Hunter Region. I think it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack to find the one I am related to. Roseanne Howard Wauchope on the Hastings River --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? What about Thomas RYAN who married Mary Ann BERIGAN 1848 RC Maitland ? Looks like they had James bpt 1849, Michael bpt 1851, Elizabeth bpt 1853 , Thomas bpt 1855 all RC Maitland. Theres also a Julia born to Thmas and Mary RYAN 1859 Wingham ?? > > Also, Elizabeth's date of birth is unknown as her death > certificate indicates she would have been born in 1844 > but the age shown at time of marriage on the death > certificate indicates she would have been born in 1846, > then again she stated on her first child's birth > registration that she was 20 at the time, therefore she > would have been born in 1854 The above Elizabeth bpt 1853 could fit ? . Any pre 1856 record indexed with a V and the year is a record of baptism not of birth > If anyone can help then it would be greatly appreciated > as there appears to be a lot of Thomas Ryan's on BDM's > and from the convict records available on the net a lot > of men named Thomas Ryan were sent to the Hunter Region. > I think it >would be like looking for a needle in a > haystack to find the one I am related to. Be more positive ! It will be a challenge to find out which one !. Suggest you get a transcription of this 1848 marriage and at least one other bapt of maybe Michael ? The National Library have digitised some 13 years issues of the Maitland Mercury newspaper to abt 1855. Would be worth checking to see if any marriage and birth notices for this RYAN family . One of those if you dont look , you wont know things ! http://www.nla.gov.au/ferg/issn/14403676.html Bye MargM Hunter Valley List Admin
