I found this article from the Maitland Mercury on a CD I hold: LARGEST FAMILY IN AUSTRALIA BELONGS TO A MT VIEW COUPLE Richard and Camilla King The search initiated by The Globe with a view to locating the largest family in Australia has revealed one of thirty. They are Mr and Mrs Richard King of Mt View via Cessnock NSW. The above facts have been brought under the notice of the Prime Minister of Australia and the Acting Premier of NSW. These gentlemen believe that "the baby is the best Immigrant" and no doubt recognise in some way the largest family in Australia. Writing to the editor of The Globe Mr King says:- "I desire to state that I came from Oxfordshire England and my wife came from Somersetshire. I was eight years of age when I arrived in Australia and my wife thirteen. We were married at Hexham NSW. We have been married fifty three years on the 2nd of August 1910 and my wife, who gave birth to thirty children, was seventy three on the 31st January last. I was seventy eight on the 1st September. When we had been married three months we were both engaged by Mr John Manning to go to Twofold Bay. My wife has given birth to thirty children, twenty eight of which were christened. The other two (twins) did not live. The first child was born on the steamer travelling from Twofold Bay to Sydney. We had three children born on the Prince of Wales' Birthday in different years, and two born on the Queen's Birthday." So far this appears to be the largest family in Australia. In order, however, that there be no doubt, the award will not be made for six weeks. If in that period we do not hear of a larger family the award will be made. (Richard was presented with a clock from Queen Victoria) It will be revealed that, when The Globe search for the largest family in Australia commenced, we published a portrait of Mr and Mrs Perkins of Hull England who have twenty eight children. This was held to be the largest family in the Kingdom. If that is so, it would appear that Australia has the honour of being the home of the parents of the largest white family in the Empire, because, though we searched all the available records, we cannot find a trace of any family that approaches even the English record. In France, the home of small family circles, strange to say, there are several over twenty, and in Germany there are at least two of twenty five. To France, if you can believe what is written in stone, goes the honour of being the birthplace of the Mother of the largest family the world has ever known. There is preserved in The Carnavalet Museum, an old tombstone taken from the old cemetery of St Marcel in Paris. It bears the inscription:- " Here lies the mother of fifty one children and all poor, Charlotte Beauleau, wife of Charles Brorport aged eighty April 6 1807" Taken from The Maitland Mercury ..· ´¨¨)) -:¦:- ¸.·´ .·´¨¨)) ((¸¸.·´ ..·´ -:¦:- -:¦:- ((¸¸.·´*.` Jenny McCarthy Brightwaters N.S.W. on beautiful Lake Macquarie
Hmmmm...the 51 children is a stretch if one does the maths, unless there were MANY multiple births. My own great-great grandmother had 2 sets of twins within her own family of 12, so that is always possible. But 51?.....
