Dear Ian My great-great grandmother Christiana was the first-born of Alexander and Jane Munro. In all, there were 6 children: a.. Christiana born 9 August 1826; b.. David Augustus born 1 November 1828; c.. William born 4 August 1831; d.. James born 6 September 1832; e.. Jane born 18 August 1834; and f.. Margaret born 26 November 1836 Shipping records show that Christiana, who was about 16 at the time, did not arrive in Australia with the rest of the family. The feeling is that maybe she stayed in Scotland to look after elderly grandparents or other members of the family, but this is only conjecture. We have not had any success in finding the date of her arrival in Australia through shipping records, but it must have been within a couple of years. It is assumed that Alexander Munro died not long after their arrival in Australia, but again, no record has been found. His widow Jane re-married on 2 April 1844. Her second husband, Richard Nichols had been transported to Australia as a convict. Here is a brief note about him: "Richard Nichols was an English convict from Stroud in Gloucestershire, who arrived in Australia in 1832 on board the ship "John". An extract from the Gloucestershire Gaol Register states that Richard committed his crime on 11 August 1831 and was confined to gaol on 14 August for stealing 2 sacks (three bushels) of flour and a cheese. He was tried and sentenced to death, commuted to transportation for life. The gaol register gives a detailed description of his appearance. He was 25 at the time of his conviction. He was assigned to employers in Sydney until he gained his Ticket of Leave in 1843, when he was permitted to remain in the district of Patricks Plains (Singleton). On 20 Mar 1843 Richard applied to the Governor for permission to marry Jane Frazer (sic). Jane's daughter Christiana was witness at the wedding. Richard and Jane had three children, James (born 24 May 1845), Harriet (born 6 June 1846) and Henry George (born 1850). Richard went on to be a very successful businessman and councillor in Singleton. Richard died on 5 January 1882, five years after Jane, who died on 18 August 1877. Richard's occupation was listed as a stonemason at the births of his children. Jane has a substantial headstone in Glenridding (Singleton) Cemetery, which may have been Richard's work." As you can see, Christiana was a witness at the wedding, so she must have come to Australia on hearing of her father's death - again only speculation. She lived to the grand old age of 90, dying in Sydney on 18 February 1917. It was a little spooky when I discovered that Jane died on 18 August, which is my brother's birthday, and her daughter Christiana died on 18 February, which is my birthday! Hope this helps you add to your family records. Hi Robyn, Ian & list Initially when I was reading this thread, I noted that I had a Munro in my tree, but could not find his birth record, so didn't think I had a connection. However, I then noticed that the name Fras/zer came into the equation, and now I think I do have a connection! A David Munro married my great aunt Alice HAYNES in Sydney 1910. He was born in Bathurst in 1886 and was the son of David Fraser MUNRO and Rosina STREINER. Can anyone tell me whose son David Fraser MUNRO is, and provide his birth details? Many thanks in advance Cathy Haynes On Sat, 2007-01-13 at 18:04 +1000, Tony Dixon wrote: > Dear Ian > > My great-great grandmother Christiana was the first-born of Alexander and Jane Munro.
