    3. Hi all Another fence sitter. Early on (previous email addies) was not just a fence sitter but work and family commitments took over and now love to read and keep up with the list and a very occasional posting. This one is for Anne re German immigration. There is a good book called 'Greetings from the Land where Milk and Honey Flows: The German Immigration to NSW 1838-1858' edited by Patricia Cloos and Jurgen Tampke published in 1993. It used to be available at the NSW State Library Shop. It discusses how they were 'enticed' into coming to Australia; a number of letters and diary entries written by the immigrants (3 letters from passengers who travelled on the 'Parland'); and the ships and passenger lists during those years. There is an index but this only lists the main families although if you know the ship they arrived on they will be listed in the passenger lists. As are the 'BUFFIER' family listed. It is a good book for insights and understanding their lives at that time. My direct family came out on the first of these ships the 'Kinnear' in 1838. They are the SECKOLD family and although some ended up later in the Hunter Valley they were contracted to the MacARTHURs at Camden Park. I do have numerous branches of family in the Hunter Valley and continue to find more names all the time. My main direct ancestor is George WEAKLEY and Hannah SCARF who arrived on the 'Lady Raffles' on 12 September 1839 (listed as WAKELY). originally working for a MARSHALL they then had land in the Hexham area and were dairy farmers. The main road after the expressway is named after them 'Weakleys Road' crossing over a creek or bridge also called Weakley. George charged a toll at one stage for anyone crossing the creek through his property. >From them there are many descendant families.
