Hi listers, I've just returned to Newcastle from Queensland and picked up the end thread of German immigration. If anyone can shed some light for me please on my family line: Peter Wilhelm RASELL/RASSEL b abt.1817 and his wife (maiden name) Marian Maglena PREINSER b1823, later to be known as Peter William RUSSEL/RUSSELL and Mary Margaret RUSSEL/RUSSELL arrived on the ship "Beulah" in 1849. He was a vine-dresser and she was a straw bonnett maker and they came with the German emigrants to help start/upgrade the wine industry in Australia with their skills, Sailing with them was a daughter Regina Wilhelmina Justina RASSEL b1843 who later married a Frederick ARENDT in Bathurst in 1861. Another daughter Margarita RASSEL b1847 in Germany died on the voyage in 1849 aboad the "Beulah" and was "buried at sea". A further nine children were born in Australia and Marian/Mary remarried a Thomas MANNELL in Bathurst in 1881 following the death of her husband Peter in 1860 in Bathurst. Question: As they were brought out to Australia for the wine industry, who employed them and where did they work and under what conditions? It seems that a lot of the action centred around the Bathurst area. Can anyone help?
