Hello I'm researching James Mulholland & Mary Mottram whose marriage was recorded in the register of the Christ Church Newcastle in 1847. I notice the BDM index states simply "Hexham; Newcastle; Christ Church". The minister was Charles Pleydell Wilton. I'm a tad confused. James states that he is of Hexham parish; Mary of "this parish". I was wondering where the church was/is and if the marriage would have taken place at Hexham or Newcastle. If anyone knows or can point me in the right direction that would be beaut. Hello Brent I am researching Isaac Perrett and Mary Ross, whose marriage is also recorded in the register of Christ Church Newcastle 11 October 1831 and BDM states district as "CH". The early church record listing for "CH" shows Hoxham, (which I assumed should be Hexham), Newcastle, Christ Church. I am also puzzled. Christ Church Anglican Cathedral is in Church Street, Newcastle. Hi Brent, If you can get to the Newcastle Regional Library you could look through the film for 1847 to find the section with Christ Church records. This should provide the answer to your question. Joe
Brent, Good evening. Would suggest you obtain a copy of the marriage certificate (or Transcript) as it is quite possible the event did not actually take place in a church. I had a similar problem where the records showed the same as yours (which was prior to civil registration). Mine actually took place at the brides place of residence in the Upper Hunter. The marriage document shows "Marriage solemnized in the Parish of Christchurch Newcastle, in the County of Northumberland in the year 1832, then goes on to nominate the names of the bride and groom and where the ceremony took place and the names of the witnesses etc. The reference in the NSW BDM's shows the place as "CH" which as you probably know is the code for Hexham; Newcastle Christ Church. Trust this helps. The Parish Registers for the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle for the period 1826 - 1995 have been lodged with the University of Newcastle. They have microfilmed them and made the microfilms available at a number of locations in NSW, the ACT and Qld.
