Yes the Historical Society is active and yes you can join. I am the president of the Maitland Family History Circle not part of the historical society but you can contact the Historical Society by phoning (02) 4933 5863 or Email [email protected] The MFHC have the Maitland Rate books from 1870-1899. We have approached the gaol but it is controlled by the council and has to cover it's own costs so again is more prone to commercial ventures. I do know that they would be keen for some type of cultural centre there but again it comes down to costs and trying to obtain grants to renovate appropriate spaces etc. Ann Campbell President Maitland Family History Circle Inc. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~ausmfhc/ [email protected]/au -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Ray Sent: Friday, 11 September 2009 10:26 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [HV] Maitland Historical Society Thanks for that link Allan. The former society had had a project, copying or indexing the Rate Books from Maitland Council. I have often wondered what happened to that work. Similarly, a wonderful member of the former Historical Society -- many DECADES ago now -- was indexing the headstones etc. in the Campbell's Hill cemetery, and I think that she was obtaining stories of each person as much as she could as well. Again, I wonder what happened to this work. (Yes, I am aware of the CD of the burials there which has been done much more recently; but this was to give potted histories of each person mentioned -- well, as far as was able to be ascertained.) Good luck to the new committee.
