I have my brick wall and would appreciate some ideas on where to go now. I have John BURGESS born 1800 Near Smithfield London, sentenced to death on 09.09.1818 for animal theft, transported for 14 yrs. John was run over by the Maitland train at Hexham on 01.02.1860. He married Janet Riddle who was born in Scotland in 1803, transported for housebreaking in 1839, and died Buttai in August 1876. This couple had 3 children _ John (born abt 1842 - poss Singleton), Harriet Maria (Married Edward Simons / Simmons) (1845 (Singleton)-1870) and Thomas (1849 (Jerry's Plains)-1918). John snr was a butcher. His son Thomas had a farm at Buttai. I know that John jnr was alive when his mother died in 1876 (according to her death cert) but that is really all I now. Can't find (and pin on him) a marriage, death or other record. I have tracked other John Burgess's only to prove they were not mine. Does any one have my John?
Hi Rosalee. A Robert Henry Burgess [Bert] was a produce merchant in Singleton in the 1930-1960 period. He may have been the son of a Henry and Elizabeth Burgess of West Maitland, born in 1902. A Bertram H. Burgess was born at Wollombi in 1886 to a Charles and Jane Burgess. HTH. Bennie.
