436 •GREVILLE'S OFFICIAL POST OFFICE DIRECTORY. MAITLAND (EAST )- a large township and electoratien the police district of Maitland, county of Northumberland, is 93 miles north from Sydney. Route : Steam to Newcastle, thence by rail. Ofces: Post, Telegraph, Government Savings Bank, and Money Order. Mails close at G.P.O. daily at 8.30 a.m. and 9.30 p,m., arriving , in post town daily at 4.30 p.m., and, 7.55 a.m.; leave for Sydney daily (Sundays excepte(l) at 9.35 a.m., arriving every evening. The township is bounded on the west by Wallis creek, over which is a bridge which unites it to West Maitland, and on the north by the Hunter river. In addition to churches of the various denominations and large private buildings in stores and private residences , there are a well-built goal, courthouse , &c., a school of arts, council chambers , branches of banks, a public school, hotels, kc. The streets are wide and well formed, and the site of the town is above the reach of floods in the Hunter. East Maitland was erected into a municipality in March, 1862: but although the first place laid out in this district by the Government, it has, from various causes, not progressed to the extent its resources might be thought to have warranted. It is the assize town of the district, which is chiefly an agricultuuralo ne; the rich alluvials oil on the flats of the Hunter yielding large crops of cereals and tobacco : the vine is also extensively cultivated. Large deposits of coal exist in the district, the geological formation of which is generally carbonaceous and ferruginous sandstone. If you would like a name looked up just say ..............
