Hi Margaret & listers, I have come to the conclusion that Durham Street became Northumberland Street, but today is Denman Street, West Maitland. This makes sense as Margaret says it was in the vicinity of the Rose Inn, which was on High Street, West Maitland (backing onto the river - so somewhere on the bend of the river). The following are references as to how I came to this conclusion. Hope you can follow. (State Records description of a record including "Denman or Northumberland or Durham Street" is a dead giveaway! '.....was about to turn off from High-street to see a sick woman. She was then near Durham street. A man suddenly came up, said she was just the woman he wanted, dragged her down John-street, .....' '.....was at this time passing near the Northumberland Bridge, and heard the noise of a woman moaning. Looking over the rails, and seeing a man and woman in John street,.....' The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser, 9 Mar 1858 pg 1 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article18642597 'The course he asked the Council to adopt was not without precedent. They would remember that the name of Durham-street was changed to that of Northumberland-street, ...' The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser, 2 Mar 1886 pg 6 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article18878610 'Near the Northumberland Bridge, High-street, West Maitland.' The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser, 7 Jun 1862 pg 1 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article18688742 'NORTHUMBERLAND BRIDGE, IMMEDIATELY OPPOSITE THE NORTHUMBERLAND HOTEL' The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser, 26 Oct 1861 pg 4 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article18684797 'Primary Application - Charles William Genge 1 rood 34 perches in Denman or Northumberland or Durham Street in John & Gawler Streets in Municipality West Maitland Parish Maitland County Northumberland Volume 2969 Folio 215' http://investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/Entity.aspx?Path=\Item\379717 Finally, on the 1912 Maitland parish map (earliest online), it shows Durham street where Denman Street is today. The word DURHAM is so small & faint, I never would have seen it without the knowledge of the previous references to focus on a particular area. (I had already checked the map when Margaret first sent the message to list & not seen it). http://parishmaps.lands.nsw.gov.au/pmap.html Deb. -----Original Message----- From: Margaret Bauer Sent: Wednesday, May 25, 2011 6:40 AM To: AUS-NSW-Hunter-Valley-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [HV] Durham Street West Maitland Hi Listers In the course of research, I have come upon a family who resided in "Durham Street, West Maitland". Being from Maitland many years ago now, I could not recall a street of that name, and so I have checked on the map to see just where this is but nothing seems to show up........................<snipped>
