-------- Original Message -------- Subject: Maitland Gaol Records Date: Tue, 13 Jul 2010 23:43:01 +1000 From: Jan <janet-haggart@netspace.net.au> To: Hello List I am hoping someone can tell me if the Maitland gaol registers are available for searching. My husband's grandfather John HALLETT was sentenced to nine months there for perjury in 1869. Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Thanks Jan Haggart
Dear Jan, Whatever records "survived" are held by State Records, Kingswood. If you go to www.records.nsw.gov.au you will find an Archives in Brief (Help Sheet) on Goals. It is possible that there is a photograph also in the Goal Photograph Book. Some of these have been microfilmed, although this date may be a bit early.. After conviction, anyone sentenced to six months goal or more is also mentioned in the Police Gazette. Also a possibility is that there are Court Records depending on the Court and the type of case. In reality you need to go to Kingswood yourself. Be prepared to spend the day there, take lunch as there are no shops nearby. While you will have to do the looking yourself, the Archivists on duty will steer you in the right direction what to look for. both the Maitland & District Genealogical Society http://www.mdgs.org.au/ and Maitland Gaol http://www.maitlandgaol.com.au/ hold the films of Maitland Gaol entry and description books. I think the gaol also has the gaol photos but you would need to contact them. I take it you have already searched the NSW State Records website and the Police Gazettes?? Hi Jan and list If I could just add some detail to Bill's excellent advice ... A search using the State Records Archives Investigator leads to this agency page: http://investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/Entity.aspx?Path=\Agency\442 This gives a brief history of the gaol etc and towards the bottom of the entry it gives "Record series created by this agency:" which you can expand into 33 items: http://investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/Entity.aspx?Path=\Agency\442\Series\Creating Some of these records relate to your period of interest - follow the link for each series of interest. e.g. http://investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/Entity.aspx?Path=\Series\2320 That entry will tell you if the series is available online, has been microfilmed etc As Ann has pointed out, some of these microfilms will be held by local family history societies or libraries. Otherwise, as Bill has said, you'll need to travel to a Reading Room ... As for photos. if I can add this to Ann's kind post: The State Records index to Gaol Photograph Books is a work in progress. You can see what has been done so far at: http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/indexes-online/gaol-records/index-to-the-gaol-photographs For Maitland Gaol, there is this note: "Please note there are two series for the Maitland Gaol Photograph Books NRS2326 [1885-1898] & NRS2327 [1875-1930]. NRS2327 appears to have been kept at the State Penitentiary, Long Bay. For the period 1885-1898 you may get two search results for a prisoners. Where the dates of both series overlap the information about prisoners is primarily the same although there will be cases where there is additional information. Please consider this when you are placing a copy order." Regards
