Dear Llew, The Ryerson Index has only indexed the Newcastle Herald from Jun 1994, and then there are days missing, months in a couple of years. The index is updated fairly regularly, fortnightly, so always worth looking again. At present there is no Back Indexing taking place of that paper, and anyone who wishes to undertake some back indexing is welcome to contact the Ryerson Index via the main page contact icon. The NSW Probate Index can be helpful to find a death up too 1984, but it is a hard slog, year by year from 1952. Working backwards would probably be better for you, although that may work in reverse too. It may be easier too to check the large cemeteries in the area.
