Not everyone on the list has hunter valley descendants but I get more information from here than the manning river or norco lists which cover the areas of my main interest so that could be why some of us are as you so kindly put it - 'fence sitters'. Hi Roseanne Any mailing list is an empty box unless subscribers join in answering queries , posting useful info . Alas both the Manning River & Norco lists are moribund at the moment , which is a shame. FWIW I certainly haven't got any Hunter Valley ancestry! I am just very interested in Australian history and in Hunter Valley and NSW Central Coast in particular are fascinating areas . Bye MargM Hunter Valley List Admin

    3. Hi listers there are three indexes (or, indices, if you prefer!) to the Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate available at the website of the Newcastle Library. Two have been previously mentioned: 1869 to 1943 http://www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au/services/newcastle_library/local_studies/local_studies_e-resources/newcastle_morning_herald_index described as: "This online index provides title & subject access to articles of local significance appearing in the Newcastle Morning Herald from 1869 to 1943. The index has over 160,000 individual entries." It is searchable on-line using a subject list: http://www2.ncc.nsw.gov.au/library/herald_subjects_1.cfm 1944 - 1984 http://www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au/services/newcastle_library/local_studies/local_studies_e-resources/newcastle_morning_herald_index/newcastle_morning_herald_index_1944_-_1977 described as: "This online index provides title & subject access to articles of local significance appearing in the Newcastle Morning Herald from 1944 to 1984. The digital images are provided as PDF files. ..." Yesterday, I came across another in their digital book section: List of personal names in the Newcastle Morning Herald index 1861 - 1965 http://www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au/services/newcastle_library/local_studies/digital_collections/digital_books2/list_of_personal_names_in_the_newcastle_morning_herald_index_1861_-_1965 These are PDF files each about 1Mb organised alphabetically. Once you download the relevant PDF, you can search within. For example, the first is Abbott to Aquin. Once downloaded, the entries are like this: NAME: ABBOTT. J. P. DATE: 1965.8.5;3 SOURCE: NMH INFO: DIES AT 73. NAME: ABBOTT. J. P. (SIR) DATE; 1897.2I.8;5 SOURCE: NMH INFO; SPEAKER OF N.S.W. LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY. NAME: ABBOTT. JOSEPH (SIR) DATE: 1901.18.9;4 SOURCE: NMH INFO: LATE. NAME: ABBOTT. JOSEPH (SIR) DATE: 1901.16.9;8 SOURCE: NMH INFO: DEATH OF. Again, this resource appears only to index editorial content of the NMH and not advertising such as family notices. It appears to be the work of Jennifer Maria Sloggett and available in hard copy in few places. http://trove.nla.gov.au/work/6165855 Once you have located an item of interest, you have to check the microfilm - but it does guide you to date and page.
