Marg, I was unable to find that photo, but some dates might help. The hospital in the form it is in the photo was c 1866 before a second wing was added sometime after 1884. Boatman's Row cottages were built 1892,so the row of terraces can't be them. Fort Scratchley was built from 1881 to 1882, but there was a miltary installation on that site prior. The sign on the building in the foreground reads "F.Ash Importer"; undoubtedly this would be Frederick Ash who started his business in Newcastle in 1855, but I doubt this is his extant store in the Civic precinct.
