Jenny, It's a sad state of affairs... no the relevant newspapers for the indexes aren't online. It would be great if NLA's Australian Newspapers had it on their to do list (I checked it fairly recently). State Library QLD has the following on microfilm (& later years - search their catalogue online) but that's still a long way from you. Newcastle morning herald and miners' advocate Milsons Point, N.S.W. : W. & F. Pascoe. 1876 Available: Microform, level 3 (call no. MFS 0175 ) Apr. 4, 1876-Oct. 4, 1980 If you have a specific reference via the index, I wonder if the following might be the solution? Through the interlibrary service at your local library ie. Townsville. http://www.slq.qld.gov.au/services/loans/ill "...books or copy requests up to 50 pages..." There is an email address at the bottom of the page... it couldn't hurt to ask them if it includes a copy of an article from the microfilm in question. But Townsville Library should know what they can ask for, surely? Let me know how you get on if you go ahead. I'd be interested to know the results. :o) Deb. -----Original Message----- From: JENNY AND BUCK ROGERS Sent: Friday, April 08, 2011 1:47 PM To: aus-nsw-hunter-valley@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [HV] NLA on line resources Ok thanks Deb that seems right. Hi Jenny, Keys are so important, aren't they? I notice more & more lately when reading something on the web that the author simply assumes the reader has the knowledge. A nice little key box on the page goes a long way. Anyway, I assume you're talking about the pdf files for each year in the 1944-1984 index. Because each file is a different year, the first numbers are the day & month. The last number I assume (because I haven't been able to access yet) is the page number. Have a nice weekend, Deb. -----Original Message----- From: JENNY AND BUCK ROGERS Sent: Friday, April 08, 2011 10:23 AM To: aus-nsw-hunter-valley@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [HV] NLA on line resources I am looking at the Newcastle Herald Index on the site can someone tell me what the numbers after the entry refers to? I found a school photo of Munni pupils from about 1914 which was apparently on display at the Munni House open day/Tillegra Dam consultation. Wondering if anyone has more photo's from Munni School from about 1910 to 1925. Thanks Lisa
Thank you to all those who have responded so far - very helpful. If anyone has school photos or student lists of 1925 - 1935 for both schools that would be great. Lisa McMurray
Hi Marg & listers, I have used Gale Newspapers through NLA. Go to the e-resources page http://www.nla.gov.au/app/eresources/ Login with your reader card (Apply online through the login box if you don't have one - it was a long time ago but I think they sent it to me very quickly. You have to live in Australia & give them an Australian address.) You can then access the licensed resources. The Newcastle Herald Index is just a link to the Newcastle Library index search page we have referred to on this list - freely available to all. http://tinyurl.com/492bfwj Hope this helps, Deb -----Original Message----- From: Marg M Sent: Friday, April 08, 2011 6:11 AM To: AUS-NSW-CENTRAL-COAST@rootsweb.com ; AUS-NSW-SYDNEY@rootsweb.com ; AUS-NSW-Hunter-Valley@rootsweb.com ; AUS-NSW-NEW-ENGLAND@rootsweb.com ; AUSTRALIA@rootsweb.com ; aus-qld@rootsweb.com ; aus-chinese@rootsweb.com Subject: [HV] NLA on line resources Was advised last night that the Gale group newspapers can also be sourced via the National Library They have a Newcastle Herald index 1869 -1942 Can some one with some spare time explore this , please ? <snipped>

Handy for those with US and UK research Gale will offer their vast historical newspaper collection for Library Week this year for a full two weeks Apr 10 to 24th. It appears that you will have to register beginning Sunday, April 10th for access to the site but it will have a number of UK newspapers and US newspapers available. The information was posted at - http://usderesources.blogspot.com/2011/04/gale-celebrate-national-library-week.html http://www.gale.cengage.com/NLW/ http://gdc.gale.com/products/gale-newsvault/ bye MargM List Admin
Lisa, St Joseph's Lochinvar catered for students from Kindergarten through to 5th Year (leaving certificate) High School It was a girl's boarding school. Some students from the local area attended as day pupils. Boy students only attended in primary school as day pupils. St Joseph's Taree only went to 3rd year high school (Intermediate Certificate) and the students then came to Lochinvar for their Leaving Certificate. This information applied in the 1950's when I was a boarder at Lochinvar from 1950 to 1955. The majority of boarders came from areas where there was not easy access to a High School. There was not the number of High schools nor the transport for school children that exists today. Hi My McLennan daughters of Munni (Dungog) went to one or both of these boarding schools in the 1920's and early 30's. Does anyone know why a student might have gone to one rather than the other - did they cater for different age groups? Does anyone know where I might get records of enrollments for these shools or school photos for that period? Thanks Lisa McMurray

Carole Port Macquarie Family History Society have published a Pioneer Register and the Manning Wallamba Family History Society have published two pioneer registers and from their web site it looks as though they may be starting to gather information for a third. Hi Benny, With regard to owners I have a reference to "Messrs Toohey's Limited" inviting tenders for additions in 1921, then another ref when it was sold 1929 (name mentioned is Weller & Co - who, from other newspaper refs, I believe were the agents). So don't know for the late 1930s yet (except the below possibility). Sydney Junction Hotel was "Sidebottoms Hotel". Off list last week another lister who used to go there tipped me off: "referred to as "Sidies", after SIDEBOTTOM who had the hotel at one stage" So I did do some searching around that name. SIDEBOTTOMs are listed as hotel keeper & manager of the hotel on the electoral roll from at least 1937 to 1943. It is possible that they owned it. There is a lot of info on the web re the families they are descended from. Thanks for your input.
