Hi forum members, Is there a list of land grants for the Maitland area ? Any advise where I should look? Thanks PC
Hi Jenny My Rowlands were from London. William, who was the second husband of my ancestor Jane Downey, was born in Stepney 1836. I guess I am interested in them because the children that William and Jane had would be in my family tree. Regards Vicki
Hi Hazel Could you also look for Duncan McLennan and Archibald McLennan in the Williams River District - Underbank and Tillegra. Thanks You wrote: > Hi Peter > At this immediate time I am transcribling the Col Sec Land Grants, Leases > and Purchases. > > If you send the person's details I will see what I can locate for you. > > Regards > Hazel
Hi Ray, Thank you for your very informative email. I have tried most of those tricks over the years without much luck. I know Elizabeth parents name but not William's parents. I will try the tricks again in case I did not do it right the first time. Many Thanks John -----Original Message----- From: Ray Sent: Wednesday, April 13, 2011 9:55 AM To: aus-nsw-hunter-valley@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [HV] re Elizabeth Sherry Hi again John. I have deleted the earlier posts on this topic, and am too snowed under at the moment to go into the list's archives to retrieve the information from them, but I do recall that in your previous posting you said that you are in Queensland. Accordingly, you might not be aware of some of the more common online resources for NSW.
Hi Vicki, where did your ROWLAND family originate? My family originated in Sussex, Eng., my grandparents came out to Sydney firstly in 1914, returned to Eng. 1920 and then returned in 1926 after my mum was born. Regards, Jenny
Hi Ray Yes, Nancy was lovely. I never met her in person but she was wonderful with her help. She was originally a Rowland and that is where my connection to her is. Her Rowlands were part of my Rowland family which was actually a half-relationship as my ancestor Jane Downey married for the second time to William Rowland. Regards Vicki
Another regional area of the NSW coastline now available AUS-NSW-MACLEAY-RIVER - For discussion of local and family history research in the Macleay River and Kempsey region of New South Wales, Australia Regards, Jenny
Hi again John. I have deleted the earlier posts on this topic, and am too snowed under at the moment to go into the list's archives to retrieve the information from them, but I do recall that in your previous posting you said that you are in Queensland. Accordingly, you might not be aware of some of the more common online resources for NSW. Firstly: here is a link to the free online indexes to BDMs in NSW up to a variety of dates (dates are given on the page there): http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index/IndexingOrder.cgi/search?event=births Try searching first for the married surname and forename for each person. It really depends on the number of hits received, as to the best way to proceed thereafter. If not many hits: easy to check them all out. If a lot of hits, as I'd expect with a surname like WILLIAMS, then maybe input ONE parent's forename to see if that narrows it down -- but beware that for a lot of the entries, parent names might be unknown. If no luck there, then delete that parent's forename, and try the forename of the other parent. etc. That site also uses the asterisk: * as a wildcard, which might help you a bit where spellings might be dicey. For example if the death might be recorded as WILLIAM instead of WILLIAMS, if you search for William* that will bring up entries under both surnames -- but warning: it will also bring them up for WILLIAMSON etc. as well. Secondly: This link is to the online indexes page at NSW State Records (the state archives). If you use their KeyName Search facility, you never know what wonderful results might appear for you. Thirdly: you are possibly familiar with the Ryerson Index of DEATHS in Australia, which is progressively working backwards in time, as their few but willing volunteers transcribe more newspaper death and funeral entries. Here is the link to the Ryerson Index though, just in case you don't have it: http://ryersonindex.net/search.php Fourthly: don't forget to look in Trove at the National Library of Australia, where they are progressively placing OCR-ed transcripts of early oz newspapers online, along with scans of the original pages. Although the OCR-ing is not very well done, once again volunteer transcribers are editing them after comparing them with the original scans, so over time it is hoped that better quality transcriptions will appear. http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper I suggest that you click on their ADVANCED SEARCH link, and then on that page, after entering your search terms, scroll down the page and click on the box beside NSW, to select ALL of the newspapers in NSW which have currently been scanned; before hitting enter or clicking on search to get your results. Hi Ray, Thank you for your post. Yes, the info supplied by Nancy to Vicki is spot on and they are my GG Grandparents. I am hoping someone maybe able to tell me their death dates. John and Vicki. I know NOTHING of any of these people, however, my GUESS is that you are BOTH talking about the same couple. I suspect that you will find that the ship "Brougham" and the ship "Broom" will be the same ship, just written down differently. If you search the online indexes at NSW State Records for shipping lists in 1842, that will give you the correct name and spelling. Vicki: you mentioned Nancy GREY. Nancy was an extremely highly-thought-of historian and genealogist in the district. It is HER guide to Tracing Family Trees in Australia (probably not its correct title) which the Society of Australian Genealogists still sell as their basic introduction to genealogy research for Australians (albeit in later updated/revised editions). Accordingly, I should expect any information which Nancy GREY provided to be of an extremely high quality. Hi Vicki, Thank you for your post. My Elizabeth Sherry was born about 1824/5 in Nth Ireland and came to Australia on board ship "Broom" in 1842 under protection of her brother in law, James McCabe who was married to Elizabeth sister, Sarah. Elizabeth had been brought out by Mr Francis Reid. Elizabeth told a fib by stating her age as 21 when she married William Williams in 1842 Regards John Qld -----Original Message----- From: Denis & Vicki Moran Sent: Tuesday, April 12, 2011 5:52 PM To: AUS-NSW-HUNTER-VALLEY@rootsweb.com Subject: [HV] re Elizabeth Sherry
Wondering if any one has information on family of Herb Deards b 1880 of Salisbury via Dungog - Son of William Deards and Eliza Sarah Edwards. Herb married Mary Saxby. Eldest surviving son of my McLennan family from Munni worked for Herb Deards on his farm at Salisbury from about 1924 - 1936 and then again during the war. George married alice Lilly Cook who also worked at the farm and their first child was born there. George was somewhat of a local bushman. His grandaughter writes: My grandfather was something of a local hero in his time - often people would get lost in the bush/mountains, either on foot or a plane would come down and it was my grandfather who would be called upon to search them out because he knew the terrain so well. The locals named a lookout after him called "George's Chair" near Barrington Tops. Would anyone know anything about the Deards property or where it is located or anything about George McLennan. Thanks Lisa McMurray Canada
Hi John I have a convict ancestor, William Sherry, from Kent England who married another convict, Bridget Regan from Cork Ireland. They were married at Singleton in 1843 and later lived at Scone. I have heard of Elizabeth Sherry before as many years ago, Nancy Gray from Scone sent me some information on her as she thought she may have belonged to my family but I am not sure about that. The following is what Nancy provided: "On 21 July 1842 William Williams, bachelor, married Elizabeth Sherry, spinster, both of Parish of Scone in St Luke's C of E by banns & consent of the Governor the witnesses being Thomas & Mary French of Scone. Permits for convicts to marry, or Marriages with sanction give: William Williams, age 26, came by Mangles(6) Life sentence, T of L -marriage sanctioned to Elizabeth Sherry aged 21, came free on Brougham. Date of sanction 12 July 1842. John Morse (chaplain) Williams owned Lot 5, section 16 of Village of Scone, 1840" I note your surname of Rice. Interestingly, I have Crothers and Rice members in my family tree who lived in the upper hunter and were originally from Armagh Ireland. Vicki
Hi fellow researchers, I have hit a brick wall in my search for my GG Grandfathers death. William Williams c1815 Somerset England Sentenced to life by Somerset Assizes in 1832 and arrived in NSW on board “Mangle 6” 19/4/1833 In 1842 he was granted permission to marry Elizabeth Sherry in Scone NSW and had 2 children that I have found so far. Louise Jane Williams b 1949 and Edmund Williams b 1844. They seemed to have lived in Scone/Moonan Brook area and I have not been able to find William or Elizabeth deaths. Does anyone know of this family or have researched them ? Any information would be of a great help to me With Many thanks John Rice Qld

Hi everyone, I'm returning to this list after many years as now I have more accurate information on the family I am researching. William George (Will) Hughes was the brother of my grandfather Levi John (Jack) Hughes. Will and his wife Margaret (nee Owen) both originally of Dinas Cross, Pembrokeshire, Wales, left Britain in 1927 on the ship Moreton Bay. >From details found in my grandmother's posessions, I know they settled in Wallsend, one address being Timmins Street and another, Abbott Street. Their children were Donald, Ida and Hughie. After his death, Will's ashes were returned to Dinas Cross. If anybody can put me in touch with anyone researching or belonging to this family, I would be very grateful. Many thanks Heather Hill
In the 1937 electoral role for New England, Thora McLennan is listed as being at Willowra, Munni - her occupation is home duties - and yet her mother and sister are at Munni, Bendolba. Does anyone know where Willowra near Munni is - perhaps a property? Thanks Lisa McMurray
