Unclaimed letters are available in the Government gazzettes. Fay
Thanks to all who replied. A bit of wishful thinking on my part. Unclaimed Letters used to be advertised in the Govt Gazettes, (just the list of names) but you'd need to be looking for a very unusual name to be able to identify a specific recipient from the lists. And also, it strikes me that if the recipient wasn't to be found where the letter was sent, and it had to be advertised in Unclaimed Letters, then it's not going to be much help to you. I don't think they kept the unclaimed letters themselves beyond a specific period. Hello Jan. I agree with your previous responders: that to the best of my knowledge, they will have been destroyed. BUT you could google to try to make e-mail contact with the HISTORICAL section of Australia Post; and put your question to them; and perhaps then share their response back here with us. Before they sold the Sydney GPO to make it into an international hotel, the historical section was located in that building, and was run by a wonderful man who loved his work and had just so much knowledge, and lots of Post Office historical publications and items. He'd have been sure to give you an authoritative answer. Hopefully there will be someone equally knowedgeable and dedicated in a similar role today, to assist you. Good luck with it. Dear Jan, When you read the Government Gazettes, there were thousands of these letters, which after a reasonable period were destroyed. Sincerely, Bill > > Can anyone tell me if unclaimed letters in the general post office Sydney, > 1852, have been preserved and are available to read anywhere? >

That a bit of wishful thinking ! .......... The Dead Letter Office these days doesn't keep things indefinitely. Same applied 150 years ago. This info can sometime help with a persons location, but that's about all. Bye MargM Hunter Valley List Admin

first off, the Letters were not kept and were destroyed I inquired many years ago on this very subject. Vann Cremer was the gentleman who was the Historical officer for Australia Post and I agree a very knowledgeable person, who loved the work he was doing., I contacted him in 1986 about the postal history of a NSW country post office . and was able to loan him an early negative which he copied and gave back to me with a lovely 8X10 print. Lorette NSW I agree with your previous responders: that to the best of my knowledge, they will have been destroyed. Hello Heather, Have you been able to sight 'The Singleton Pioneer Register' ?. It has 4 Freeman listed= William; Robert; Charles and George. If you cannot access this book, let me know as I can send detail. HTH. Bennie.
I am researching the BOYCE family of Stockton. Walter Hugh BOYCE was born 1826 in London. After trying the goldfields of San Francisco, he settled in Newcastle, living at Stockton and married Margaret Donovan, using the name Walter Wales and registering his children with the surnames of Wells. He started the ferry service from Stockton to Newcastle in 1855 eventually retiring in 1904. At this time, he was interviewed by a reporter for the "Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners Advocate" and on May 9, 1904 the paper published the interview. I would like to get a copy of the publication, and wondered where I should look for this article, would it be held in Newcastle or should I go to the State Library in Sydney? My son in law and grandchildren are descended from Walter and Margaret Boyce, through his eldest son Robert George Boyce and Maud Mary Thompson. I have a very indistinct photograph of Walter Hugh Boyce and would be grateful to anyone who could supply me with a clearer copy. Beryl Central Coast
