    3. Hi Bill Thank you for your response. My enquiry relates to my great grandfather Albert Edward Bird who was brought to Australian to run professionally in 1869 , promoted as Long Distance Champion of England. He competed at Newcastle and in December 1870 married Alice Walmsley who was a daughter of the initial proprietor of the City Arms Joseph Walmsley. I was thinking they may have met at the Hotel. That it was a rendezvous for sporting fraternity strengthens that view. regards John : oldboybill@westnet.com.au > To: aus-nsw-hunter-valley@rootsweb.com > Date: Fri, 20 May 2011 21:09:25 +1000 > Subject: Re: [HV] Walmsley family / City Arms Hotel > > Dear John, > > If you spend a bit of time looking at the Sands Directory you will find it > mentioned there probably year after year until demolition. 3. Dear John, If you spend a bit of time looking at the Sands Directory you will find it mentioned there probably year after year until demolition. Some entries have the name of the publican. Just not sure what year the Sands started to included Newcastle entries. Every Liquor License has to be renewed Annually. They are mentioned in the Government Gazette, about August, each year in the Licensing District, and this would be the Hunter District. State Records would have the butts of the license with some details on it. 3. Hi John, Not sure ? if you have seen this snippet on the www, or if it helps ? The long-gone City Arms Hotel stood on the eastern corner of Hunter and Market streets from 1870. It was a popular rendezvous for the sporting fraternity and was rebuilt in 1905 as the Central Hotel. It later became the Hotel Hunter and is today unrecognisable in the Hunter Street Mall. Part of it is now occupied by the Sanity record store opposite Market Square. taken from http://www.hotelsnewcastle.com.au/hotels-newcastle-articles/2006/9/16/all-over-bar-the-shouting/ [1996] A partial phot (on Flickr) http://www.flickr.com/photos/uon/3271386590/ Diane Hills District Nth West Sydney -------------------------------------------------- From: "John Bird" <johnkb13@hotmail.com> Sent: Friday, May 20, 2011 9:53 AM To: <aus-nsw-hunter-valley@rootsweb.com> Subject: [HV] Walmsley family > Hi > I would like to find out more about Joseph Walmsley and the City Arms > Hotel Newcastle. 3. Dear Listers I am trying to find out any information about James SMITH and Esther COMODY (sic) who were married in Wollombi in 1857. They were witnesses to my husband’s great-grandparents, William MANN and Sarah LILLEY, marriage in Wollombi in 1862. I have no idea if they were friends of the couple or “professional” marriage witnesses. Any information about their lives may be the clue to finding out about Sarah LILLEY’s parents’ ancestry, convicts John LILLEY (Minerva 1824) and Catherine CARMODY (Pyramus 1836) who served out their time with George LODER in the Patrick Plains area. Here’s hoping for any little snippet of information. Wendy Lindsay Mackay, Qld

    3. Hello Tim. If you google for "who was who in america" (USING the inverted commas), you will receive lots of hits; many by the publishing company of that publication. Here is a link to the wikipedia entry for that company, which was my first hit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marquis_Who%27s_Who It would appear that they have been publishing lots of hard-copy Who's Who titles for a while now, including Who WAS who. Another of the hits was from the publishing company, advertising that they now have an online service, but it means paying a subscription to access it, and my guess is that it will not be cheap to do so. But now I work part-time so have more hours to get back to it, I am researching Robert STEWART and Mary O'NEIL/O'NEILE/O'NEAL/NEIL. Robert was born in Stirling, Scotland C1807, died West Maitland C1900. Robert married Mary at the Catholic Church, West Maitland on 15th September 1840. Mary was born in County Kerry, Ireland C1814 and died West Maitland C1898. Both came to Australia as convicts. Robert arrived in 1830 after being sentenced 7 years for stealing butter. Mary came to Australia in 1837 after being sentenced 7 years for stealing from a dwelling house. I have purchased a couple of death certificates but they were the wrong ones. There were too many to buy them all. They had five children William C1840 - 1892 Ellen C1843 - Robert 1845 - James Alexander 1849 - 1936 (my g grandfather) David 1853 - I look forward to hearing from anyone that may be related or can offer any assistance. 3. Hello Heather, The following is extracted from the Singleton Pioneer Register, which was published about 1990. FREEMAN. GEORGE. A wheelwright by trade- he m. 22/3/1841 @ Whittingham [near Singleton]- St. Andrews, to Mary Ann Burns, [Smith], who was b. 9/10/1821 to Thomas Burns & Elizaberth Sandall, or Tyrell/Turrell. He d. 7/7/1891. He lived at Patricks Plains and Lochinvar. It is very unusual that his date/place of birth is not shown, nor the names of the parents. ISSUE. George. b. 1/1/1839; Thomas. b. 1842; John b. 1844; William. b. 1848; Andrew. b. 1850; James. b. 1852; Annie. b. 1853; Elizabeth. b. 1855; Mary. b. 1859; Eliza. b. 1861; & Walter. b. 1868. [ Mary's first husband was a Pallett/Palate and her second was a John Crane--17/2/1890. [ I guess this is the date of marriage] Mary Ann Burns' father died in 1824, and she was brought up as SMITH by her mother and her second husband, John Smith. Also have listing for William Freeman. b. 1811/1812 at Richmond--s/o Samuel; Robert Freeman, b. 20/9/1836 at Patricks Plains, and Charles Arthur b. 20/3/1867 at Singleton. The data for Charles, Robert & William was entered by Mrs. D. Freeman, 57 Elwers Rd., Rosebud. Vic. 3939. The data for George came from S&L Bennett, 9A Linden Ave, Linden. NSW. 2778. I have no idea if these addresses are still current. The Singleton Family History Society also holds some data relating to George Freeman. Finally, I have noticed that the Registrar General used two spellings for Patricks Plain-- or Patrick Plains. You need to check both, however the latest BDM records on line seem to have solved the problem by not asking the question. I trust that you get something useful from this diatribe.
