Does anyone have any information on Michael Minchan, who is reported as arriving on the Java ? I suppose this was on 18.11.1833 because there was no previous arrival as far as I can discover. I think he must have been taken directly to the Hunter, but he isn't listed in Free Settler or Felon. Ken Thompson

Hi , this is so completely worth it http://email.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=email&zu=http://cnbc7.com
Hi Margaret, I think the Rose Inn was in High Street, West Maitland, backing onto the river. At TROVE newspapers I searched on the following terms: "rose inn" street West Maitland This first hit is an 1849 article mentioning building allotments which had frontages to High Street & were also opposite The Rose Inn. Then Googling the street with the hotel name gave me the following: http://www.jenwilletts.com/rose_inn_west_maitland.htm To get an exact location I would check further newspaper articles for any references & also old photos of high street which may include the hotel name on the front of the building. There is a mention of the Maitland Amateur Theatre being nearly opposite the Rose Inn in a Maitland Mercury newspaper article in 1893 (a repeat of an 1844 article) so if someone knows where that was, it may help. Hope that helps, Deb. -----Original Message----- From: Margaret Bauer Sent: Wednesday, May 25, 2011 6:45 AM To: aus-nsw-hunter-valley@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [HV] Durham Street West Maitland I think I might have made a mistake with the name of the Inn, and it should just be the ROSE INN somewhere in West Maitland. Dear Ian, I have an interest in that person, but it is distant. He is part of the family of a cousin of mine. Our mothers, twins, and BELLAMY is on his other side. Hello Listers, In the recent listings of the above family, are any related to James Zadock BELLAMY (1798-1875) who married Hannah Singleton?? Regards, Ian Wright

I think I might have made a mistake with the name of the Inn, and it should just be the ROSE INN somewhere in West Maitland. Hi Listers In the course of research, I have come upon a family who resided in "Durham Street, West Maitland". Being from Maitland many years ago now, I could not recall a street of that name, and so I have checked on the map to see just where this is but nothing seems to show up. Is there someone out there who is a bit of a local History buff who just might know please? I know there have been many streets that have experienced name changes over a century or so, and maybe this is what has happened here, but at the moment all I can seem to find out is that it was in the vicinity or not that far from the "Rose and Crown Inn", but of course I have no idea where that even was either. Oh, I nearly forgot to add that the time frame I am looking roughly at is in the 1850s to the 1890s incase that has any bearing on the query. Thankyou Margaret ************************* Margaret Bauer Qld, Australia bauerm@tpg.com.au *************************
Thanks for your reply Bill. I'll hunt up the name in State Records and see what I can find. I did a quick search and found a house in Muswellbrook that Charles built, as he was a prominent builder there, its heritage-listed now. The search also bought up some court appearances in Trove. Richard
Dear Richard, I have been reminded that even though there may not be a Last Will and Testament, if that looks like being the person you are interested in, there could be a Probate Packet and Stamp Duty File as Eln indicates involvement of the Public Trustee. Where there is no will, anyone who thinks they have a claim on the estate, have to make an Affidavit as to how that comes about. This could lead you to family members you do not know about. Sincerely, Bill > The only Charles Joseph SKINNER on the NSW Probate Index for that period > died on 16 Jul 1935 of Gloucester and Via Singleton. Dear Richard, The only Charles Joseph SKINNER on the NSW Probate Index for that period died on 16 Jul 1935 of Gloucester and Via Singleton. His Probate is marked Eln, which as I understand it means he did not leave a will. Hello Does anyone know the death date of Charles Joseph Skinner - he was a carpenter & builder in Muswellbrook & died in 1935, but I can't find the date. Thank you Richard
Hi Pam As I do have this particular Bellamy family in my tree I am sending you a file (in a separate email) on what I have got on them There are a few trees on the net for this family but I have found 1 mistake for a Thomas Bellamy b. 26 Jan 1846 Wollombi to William & Eleanor (Ellen) Bellamy. The trees on the net have this Thomas married to Minnie Norton 1876 Maitland but I HAVE found this marriage on the Maitland parish films and this Thomas was the s/o Thomas & Margaret nee Clark. Thomas b. 1846 actually died 24 Dec 1846 Wollombi where he was also buried aged 11m. Heather Macdonald Heather Macdonald
Dear Pam, That Bellamy is related to the Sydney Bellamy's - Penrith - I researched him looking for the child of William's first marriage named William, however, he went to Tamworth. I do have some information about this family, from memory. Kind regards, Janice Today's Topics: 1. Re: Thomas & Caroline Bellamy nee Chapman (Pam Dowling) 2. Hi John, Have you Googled "City Arms Hotel Newcastle"? You will get a photo of the hotel. Regards, Joe
Dear John, On that basis you should peruse the local newspapers to see what social events there were, and the results of sporting events. Sincerely, Bill > Thank you for your response. Hi Diane Thank you for your response. My enquiry relates to my great grandfather Albert Edward Bird who was brought to Australian to run professionally in 1869 , promoted as Long Distance Champion of England. He competed at Newcastle and in December 1870 married Alice Walmsley who was a daughter of the initial proprietor of the City Arms Joseph Walmsley. I was thinking they may have met at the Hotel. That it was a rendezvous for sporting fraternity strengthens that view.regardsJohn > From: dianep@optusnet.com.au > To: aus-nsw-hunter-valley@rootsweb.com > Date: Fri, 20 May 2011 18:57:12 +1000 > Subject: Re: [HV] Walmsley family / City Arms Hotel > > Hi John, > > Not sure ? if you have seen this snippet on the www, or if it helps ? > > The long-gone City Arms Hotel stood on the eastern corner of Hunter and > Market streets from 1870. > It was a popular rendezvous for the sporting fraternity and was rebuilt in > 1905 as the Central Hotel. > It later became the Hotel Hunter and is today unrecognisable in the Hunter > Street Mall. > Part of it is now occupied by the Sanity record store opposite Market > Square. > > taken from > http://www.hotelsnewcastle.com.au/hotels-newcastle-articles/2006/9/16/all-over-bar-the-shouting/ > [1996] > > > A partial phot (on Flickr) > http://www.flickr.com/photos/uon/3271386590/ > > > > Diane > Hills District > Nth West Sydney > > > -------------------------------------------------- > From: "John Bird" <johnkb13@hotmail.com> > Sent: Friday, May 20, 2011 9:53 AM > To: <aus-nsw-hunter-valley@rootsweb.com> > Subject: [HV] Walmsley family > > > Hi > > I would like to find out more about Joseph Walmsley and the City Arms > > Hotel Newcastle.
