Hi Listers I don't have a subscription to Ancestry but have located via their index a 1901 Census entry: Thomas C Morgan Age: 33 Spouse: Amy E Hampshire Household schedule no.: 111 Their index says that Amy was 82 which I suspect is a mistranscription of 32. Also interested in members of the household. I believe they were married Jun Qtr 1898 in the South Stoneham district, Hampshire (Thomas Charles MORGAN and Amy Elizabeth LOOSEMORE). At some stage, Thomas, an engineer, and Amy and whatever family they had at that stage (research ongoing!) came to Australia. By 1915 they were living at Islington, NSW. In the NSW BDM Index, there is a death in 1941 registered at Wallsend for Thomas Charles MORGAN giving his parents as William John and Eleanor Jane; there is a 1964 death registered at Wallsend for Amy Elizabeth MORGAN giving parents as William and Margaret. I haven't checked the electoral rolls yet but I believe in the 1950s Amy Elizabeth MORGAN was living at 84 Main Road, Cardiff Heights. If some kind person or persons could check the 1901 England Census and the NSW Electoral Rolls, I would be grateful. Regards
I am putting in an order for the above book if anyone would like a copy please email me of list for cost. Regards Tracie King

Found in the SAGEN mailing list One of those if you dont look web sites ! http://pericles.ipaustralia.gov.au/ols/auspat/ The Australian government has put online a new database that lists patent applications going back as far as 1904. The database contains over 1.6 million patent applications covering all of Australia and can be searched by inventor's name (including spelling variations) as well as type of invention. This is not the normal type of website that a genealogist would think to look at but it might be a great website to search if you think one of your ancestors may have been an inventor, scientist, engineer or tinkerer. Certainly, it doesn't hurt to take a look. Access is free. Enjoy MargM List Admin
What I found out is that Julia's mother (Martha Priest) and 5 of her siblings died in the massive 1870 floods in Denman. Only Julia (4 years old) and her father Patrick Ryan survived by clinging to a tree. Her birth certificate says "unnamed" which is why I couldn't find her. Thanks to Muswellbrook FHS for finding her for me. Thanks, Ray. I don’t mind a puzzle when it involves history. It is amazing what you can learn from other people’s family history puzzles. Hi everyone Just a quick reply to thank everyone who contributed to helping me get to the bottom of where exactly Durham Street was in West Maitland. It is appreciated very much and from my very young days of living down there in childhood, I can recall precisely where that is now. Thanks again Margaret ************************* Margaret Bauer Qld, Australia bauerm@tpg.com.au *************************
Hi Margaret & listers, I have come to the conclusion that Durham Street became Northumberland Street, but today is Denman Street, West Maitland. This makes sense as Margaret says it was in the vicinity of the Rose Inn, which was on High Street, West Maitland (backing onto the river - so somewhere on the bend of the river). The following are references as to how I came to this conclusion. Hope you can follow. (State Records description of a record including "Denman or Northumberland or Durham Street" is a dead giveaway! '.....was about to turn off from High-street to see a sick woman. She was then near Durham street. A man suddenly came up, said she was just the woman he wanted, dragged her down John-street, .....' '.....was at this time passing near the Northumberland Bridge, and heard the noise of a woman moaning. Looking over the rails, and seeing a man and woman in John street,.....' The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser, 9 Mar 1858 pg 1 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article18642597 'The course he asked the Council to adopt was not without precedent. They would remember that the name of Durham-street was changed to that of Northumberland-street, ...' The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser, 2 Mar 1886 pg 6 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article18878610 'Near the Northumberland Bridge, High-street, West Maitland.' The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser, 7 Jun 1862 pg 1 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article18688742 'NORTHUMBERLAND BRIDGE, IMMEDIATELY OPPOSITE THE NORTHUMBERLAND HOTEL' The Maitland Mercury & Hunter River General Advertiser, 26 Oct 1861 pg 4 http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article18684797 'Primary Application - Charles William Genge 1 rood 34 perches in Denman or Northumberland or Durham Street in John & Gawler Streets in Municipality West Maitland Parish Maitland County Northumberland Volume 2969 Folio 215' http://investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/Entity.aspx?Path=\Item\379717 Finally, on the 1912 Maitland parish map (earliest online), it shows Durham street where Denman Street is today. The word DURHAM is so small & faint, I never would have seen it without the knowledge of the previous references to focus on a particular area. (I had already checked the map when Margaret first sent the message to list & not seen it). http://parishmaps.lands.nsw.gov.au/pmap.html Deb. -----Original Message----- From: Margaret Bauer Sent: Wednesday, May 25, 2011 6:40 AM To: AUS-NSW-Hunter-Valley-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [HV] Durham Street West Maitland Hi Listers In the course of research, I have come upon a family who resided in "Durham Street, West Maitland".
