    3. Marg, Further to my earlier messages re this photo, further research has revealed that the said Frederick Ash commenced business in Hunter Street in 1855, moving to larger, rented premises on the corner of King & Brown Streets in 1860. His premises in the now Civic precinct were built in 1904. 3. Hi Lindsay, Zara Street is still there,The old Beaches Hotel was removed in the 60s I remember having a beer there in the early 60s,it was down from the hospital. Zara Street had many boarding houses in the early 1900s I think the Beaches Hotel that you have mentioned is The Beach Hotel at Merewether it over looks Merewether beach. 3. Marg, I was unable to find that photo, but some dates might help. The hospital in the form it is in the photo was c 1866 before a second wing was added sometime after 1884. Boatman's Row cottages were built 1892,so the row of terraces can't be them. Fort Scratchley was built from 1881 to 1882, but there was a miltary installation on that site prior. The sign on the building in the foreground reads "F.Ash Importer"; undoubtedly this would be Frederick Ash who started his business in Newcastle in 1855, but I doubt this is his extant store in the Civic precinct. 3. Marg, It is definitely Newcastle. The large building to the right is the early Newcastle Hospital; it features in one of Ralph Snowball's photos dated 1890. The row of terrace houses to the left is "Boatman's Row", now opposite the entrance to Fort Scratchly. I have seen this photo before somewhere, so I'll start looking & let you know if I find it. 3. Hi Marg, I too thought it was Newcastle, thinking the headland was Nobby's. I found this on the website below: "...N1719 Contrasting effects - A.B.C. building and old weather-worn house, beyond is St. Philips in Watt Street with amplifiers projecting from belfry. To the left is Royal Newcastle Hospital new wing..." If someone can look at the photograph N1719 as mentioned then it can be confirmed, if it is Newcastle. http://www.Newcastle.edu.au/Resources/Divisions/Academic/Library/Cultural%20Collections/pdf/dombrain.pdfThough the two storey building on the right near the shore, looks like aCatholic school. Then I thought the terrace houses reminded me of Meribumblaon the South Coast.Cheers,Janice.----- Original Message -----From: "MargaretB" <mbergies@optusnet.com.au>To: <aus-nsw-hunter-valley@rootsweb.com>Sent: Monday, June 06, 2011 5:41 PMSubject: Re: [HV] State Records photo ?> Hi Marg>> The building in the centre right third, is that the Royal Newcastle> Hospital.?>> MargaretB> Lake Macquarie> NSW Australia>> ----- Original Message -----> From: "MargM" <genknut@exemail.com.au>> To: <AUS-NSW-Hunter-Valley@rootsweb.com>> Sent: Monday, June 06, 2011 5:28 PM> Subject: [HV] State Records photo ?>>>> State Records want to know what this photo is of

    3. Hi Marg and listers I have just discovered that the LDS indexers have been working on the ENG/WLS Census database. Sometimes an ancestry.com search doesn't produce the goods and having a second index is handy. Point your browser at: https://www.familysearch.org/search/collection/list#page=1&recordType=Census&countryId=1927033 or use this shorter link: http://tinyurl.com/LDS-ENG-WLS-Census-Collection The latest update was the 4th April 2011. The 1881 Index is by household which is why, I suspect, that the number of records is 5,962,278. There is no index for 1871. There are no images but a link to findmypast but you need a $ub$cription or pay-a$-you-go to view their images. Regards Ian J

I just checked the LDS Catalog and they have a filming of Parish register transcripts, 1835-1878, Church of England in Turkey, Anglican Chaplaincy (Constantinople). The LDS also have the 1881 Census indexed and cross-referenced and I have found the MORGAN family back in England: there are four children born in Constantinople over an 8 or 9 year period. He is an engineer (according to a 1959 marriage certificate for one of the children and consistent with this Census record) which probably brought him to Newcastle: he is not listed in the 1901 Federal Directory in the lists of engineers, nor in Islington/Tighes Hill.
