This Sarah MANTLE married a George Thomas BRADSHAW on 8 December 1880 in Newcastle as a spinster; Father William MANTLE; Mother Charlotte NEWTON; Reg 4340. Sarah BRADSHAW died on 8 September 1894 in Newcastle and his buried at Cof E Cemetery, Waverley, NSW. Father William MANTLE; Mother Charlotte NEWTON. This Sarah MANTLE is also supposed to have married Charles DILLON in 1877 at Brisbane Water, NSW and had a daughter to him in 1880 who died 4 weeks later 11 Apr 1880 (as per a couple of Trees on the internet). I searched the NSW BDM and I found that there were 3 X Sarah MANTLE born: Sarah J Mantle to John and Ann in 1850 Sarah A Mantle to William and Charlotte in Maitland in 1857 and finally Sarah A Mantle to John Sarah in Maitland in 1861. The other marriage is: Sarah MANTLE m David E JAMES in 1885 in Lambton. Was my Sarah MANTLE a bigamist or has someone got the wrong information in their Family Tree? Shirlee Wellington, NZ
Dear Shirlee, Lesson number one is not to simply believe what someone else has researched, without further proof, such as certificates of birth, marriage and death. We can get transcriptions, which are cheaper. Our records, if filled in correctly, will give details of parents, other siblings, place of burial or birth etc, which will help to prove who is who. There will not be that information in the 1850 as it is only really a Baptism Record. Official Registration started in 1856. Sincerely, Bill > This Sarah MANTLE married a George Thomas BRADSHAW on 8 December 1880 in > Newcastle as a spinster; Father William MANTLE; Mother Charlotte NEWTON; > Reg 4340. > > Sarah BRADSHAW died on 8 September 1894 in Newcastle and his buried at > Cof E Cemetery, Waverley, NSW. Hi Jan and list If I could just add some detail to Bill's excellent advice ... A search using the State Records Archives Investigator leads to this agency page: http://investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/Entity.aspx?Path=\Agency\442 This gives a brief history of the gaol etc and towards the bottom of the entry it gives "Record series created by this agency:" which you can expand into 33 items: http://investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/Entity.aspx?Path=\Agency\442\Series\Creating Some of these records relate to your period of interest - follow the link for each series of interest. e.g. http://investigator.records.nsw.gov.au/Entity.aspx?Path=\Series\2320 That entry will tell you if the series is available online, has been microfilmed etc As Ann has pointed out, some of these microfilms will be held by local family history societies or libraries. Otherwise, as Bill has said, you'll need to travel to a Reading Room ... As for photos. if I can add this to Ann's kind post: The State Records index to Gaol Photograph Books is a work in progress. You can see what has been done so far at: http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/indexes-online/gaol-records/index-to-the-gaol-photographs For Maitland Gaol, there is this note: "Please note there are two series for the Maitland Gaol Photograph Books NRS2326 [1885-1898] & NRS2327 [1875-1930]. NRS2327 appears to have been kept at the State Penitentiary, Long Bay. For the period 1885-1898 you may get two search results for a prisoners. Where the dates of both series overlap the information about prisoners is primarily the same although there will be cases where there is additional information. Please consider this when you are placing a copy order." Regards

Hello Bill, I have some records from Goulburn Gaol where an ancestor of mine spent 3 years in the very early 1900s. From memory Goulburn was the first Gaol to have inmates photographed, and if it had not been for this photo, I would not have any of this man. It is an interesting story in my family history, and I can just remember my grandfather Jim in his later years in 1941/1942, when he came to visit us, usually on a Saturday afternoon. The memory is made stronger, in that he used to bring me a little ice cream in a cardboard "bucket" !! After Jim's sentence was completed, the judge from the trial got him a job with the Water Board, and years later he was working in the inner western suburbs of Sydney. The group he was with, were putting in the huge water mains that are underground, and one of his mates went down into the hole they had dug, not realising there was gas in there as well as water, and he collapsed and his body was washed further down this main. My grandfather jumped in after him but could not rescue him, and Jim was brought back up again, probably not in a marvellous state either! For this event, he was awarded the Royal Humane Society Medal for Bravery. Jim died in July, 1942, aged about 70, so I was three and a half. Isn't family history fascinating. Liz. both the Maitland & District Genealogical Society http://www.mdgs.org.au/ and Maitland Gaol http://www.maitlandgaol.com.au/ hold the films of Maitland Gaol entry and description books. I think the gaol also has the gaol photos but you would need to contact them. I take it you have already searched the NSW State Records website and the Police Gazettes?? Dear Jan, Whatever records "survived" are held by State Records, Kingswood. If you go to www.records.nsw.gov.au you will find an Archives in Brief (Help Sheet) on Goals. It is possible that there is a photograph also in the Goal Photograph Book. Some of these have been microfilmed, although this date may be a bit early.. After conviction, anyone sentenced to six months goal or more is also mentioned in the Police Gazette. Also a possibility is that there are Court Records depending on the Court and the type of case. In reality you need to go to Kingswood yourself. Be prepared to spend the day there, take lunch as there are no shops nearby. While you will have to do the looking yourself, the Archivists on duty will steer you in the right direction what to look for. Sincerely, Bill > > I am hoping someone can tell me if the Maitland gaol registers are > available for searching. Hi Marg Thought our members would be interested in the info on Queensland certificates that you wrote on 4.7.2011. Would it be alright if I included it in this month's Lake Macquarie Family History Group Newsletter. Hope you are keeping well and warm Pat Patricia D West on Beautiful Lake Macquarie

Thanks Marg. It was nice of you to write to them, and to then share their response with us. Much appreciated. That they are digitising all records is great for the future. It would be nice to hope that this will result in cheaper certificates in the future -- but I won't be holding my breath waiting for that. ha ha. ray ----- Original Message ----- From: "MargM" <genknut@exemail.com.au> > > Public access to QLD marriage indexes has been stuck at 1939 for > quite a long time( On line to 1934 - on fiche to 1939) > > In some frustration I sent the QLD BDMS an email late last week > and got a very prompt reply > > At this point in time I am unable to advise when further Marriage indexes will be released.
