From Tamworth Pioneer Register (date unknown) SOLOMONS, George Albert ; Came here as the first, of three generations of G.A.Solomons to conduct a photographic studio in Tamworth, which he established on November 18, 1891, at approximately where part of the T&G Insurance at 424 Peel Street is now situated, After a couple of moves, the studio was finally located at what is now the Australian Eagle Insurance Group at 245 Peel St. He was succeeded by his son, G.A. (Bertie) a talented violinist, and, he by his son, G.A (Jan), who retired a few years ago because of dermatitis from the photographic chemicals. It is quite a coincidence that Jan's brother, Sir Adrian Solomons, MLC, has his solicitors office of Everingham, Solomons & Co, about where his grandfather started nearly 97 years ago. I'm also after Smiths in the same area if anyone with Smiths in their family reads this. My George Smith was the son of John and Mary Smith and was born in Ardnamurchan in about 1828. The family arrived in NSW on the George Fife in 1840 and moved to the Hunter Valley some time after that. Hi Rose From the Mechanical Eye on Australia, photography 1841 - 1900 by Alan Davies & Peter Stanbury page 232 "George A Solomon Glenn Innes, NSW 1889-90 Opposite Caledonian Hotel Tamworth 1892-1900" The book stops at 1900 so this doesn't mean the Tamworth business stopped then. I would echo the other poster's suggestion of getting Lenore Frost's book as is goes into the 1920's, so you can narrow down the date from other features such as the type of paper or card used, the props, hair styles and clothing. members.optushome.com.au/lenorefrost/ Good luck On 31 Jan 2006 at 23:46, H Dickinson wrote: > Hi Rose, > > There is a book "The Mechanical Eye" which details most photographers > - not sure which dates, but it's worth a try. Thank you to Darcy, Helen and Judy for their help with the information on when the photographer G.A.Solomons was in business in Tamworth. With this information I can be 99% sure that the lady in question was Betsy Deborah McDONALD b 1885 Manilla daughter of Thomas McDONALD and Deborah WALKER. Betsy McDonald married 1914 Manilla NSW to Malcolm Ernest YOUNG b 1888 son of Alexander Henry YOUNG and Mary Jane SULLIVAN Thanking again the above people for their time and help. Regards Rose Morrison
Hi Rose, I have photos taken by G.A.Solomons, Peel Street, Tamworth in 1899 and 1902. He was there as early as the 1880s, but I don't know how long he was in business. There are books (Lenore Frost's "Dating Family Photos 1850-1920" is one Australian one with good illustrations) which help date photos by type and size, variations in studio backgrounds and by details of men's and women's costume, which I've found helpful. Hi Rose, There is a book "The Mechanical Eye" which details most photographers - not sure which dates, but it's worth a try. It will tell you what years & where a photographer was working. Also from *A Chronoligical History of Tamworth*; By 1925 G A "Bertie" SOLOMONS was well established, having taken over the business founded by his father .....first to have taken successfull pictures by night ..... invited to lecture in Sydney on subject...... during 1925 won Daily Telegraph Portrait Prize ... charged 10/- for 3 cabinet sized portraits 160mm x 120mm or 70/- a dozen ...Elder son G A "Jan" SOLOMONS worked with him. I hope this helps Helen On 31/01/06, Rose Morrison <rosebakmor@bigpond.com.au> wrote: > > Have a photo taken by photographer G.A. Have a photo taken by photographer G.A. Solomons, Tamworth, NSW. Could some-one please tell me when this person was in business as there is no name on the photo to identify the lady. Regards Rose
` Is anyone researching a Smith Family from West Maitland?? I would like to connect with decendants of George E.Smith, born 1863, died 1926, son of Thomas Smith and Susan A. Sheppard. George Smith married Emily Medora Beavis, in 1886 in West Maitland. Emily Beavis was my G/Mother's sister. Carole.
Hi listers, I am trying to find out if the headstone of my ggrandfather's grave at Luskintyre Church of England Cemetery is still standing and if it is, could sks possibly take a photo of it for me or inform me of the inscription if it's still visible. His name is William McBriar (sometimes spelt McBrier) died 18 March 1896 age 60 buried 19 March 1896 Husband of Emma His wife (Emma) and only surviving son (William) are buried together at Branxton Cemetery and when I visited there in 2004 to photograph several family graves I was under the impression that Emma and William buried in the same grave were husband & wife, but not so. I am also hoping his headstone may help me find where William originated from. Any help or advice would be most welcome. Regards Cecily Smith Brisbane

Hi Folks, Hope you all have a great Australia Day. Sorry to request this as I know Victoria is not in NSW but am trying to get the birth details of John BARRINGTON, reported to have been in Victoria between 1862 & 1870. He married Annie Cecilia MACALE/ MACOLE in Goulburn mid-1890's & divorced her in 1900. Many thanks in advance, Glynis Wheeler, Forest Hill, NSW. PS - sorry to push this but I only have the net on till this coming Sunday as I am moving from Sydney to Forest Hill & it will be a couple of week before I get things up & running down there. GW
