This topic is frequently aired on some of the Yorkshire England lists often at great length. I have not taken up the free offer from Ancestry, however I have subscribed to Ancestry.com.uk, which is part of the US Ancestry. Each quarter I get an email advising that the are going to bill me via my credit card, if I don't wish that to happen and wish to cancel my sub, I only have to email them. I have found a lot through this subscription and am staying on because I think they are adding the 1841 census some time this year. Hi Jenny I have taken out the trial membership on a couple of occasions. The first time (about 2 years ago) I did have trouble at the end as Ancestry required you to contact their toll free number in the US to cancel the subscription. I took out the trial membership over Christmas 2005 and had no problems - but I made sure that I cancelled the membership about 3 working days before it was due and kept a copy of the email confirming the cancellation. Hi Judy Pardey & Guest Dungog 1900 So looks like they started then - the book stops in 1900 so they may well have been in business for some time after this. So you would be best looking at other things to help date the photos Couldn't encourage you more to buy the Lenore Frost book which has been mentioned before. Hello all, Just noting all the past chit chat about dating photographs. I wonder if someone who has the book "The Mechanical Eye" could look up 'Pardey and Guest', Dungog, for me. I have a photo that I think is my gg grandmother, but, of course, there is no name on the photo and it is hard to date. If I knew when Pardey and Guest were operating it would help. Many thanks for any help. Regards Judy
In reference to the Commonage, you may find this book helpful and very informative..........the following was taken from a review on the internet. The Newcastle Pasturage Reserve ("The Commonage") - A List of Applicants to Purchase, by Monica Gibbs. This book should prove invaluable to those whose ancestors settled in Newcastle, NSW, in its very early days. For nearly half the nineteenth century, "The Commonage" was home to thousands of Newcastle residents, mostly miners in the local collieries and their families who occupied modest dwellings, without paying rent or owning their land. In 1889, an Act of the NSW Parliament set up local hearings of the Land Board to examine over 1,000 applicants to purchase. The book outlines the history of "The Commonage" and includes maps of the suburbs now covering the area, a sample of the original plot map, a copy of a purchase document, besides a full list of applicants, their addresses, site improvements, value of the land and decisions of the Board. The book is of 72 A4 pages, soft-bound, Published: December 1999 Publisher: Newcastle Family History Society Inc. ISBN: 1875916164 The cost is $15 per copy, plus $2 postage, and is available from the Newcastle Family History Soc. Inc., PO Box 189, Adamstown, NSW 2289. Kaye, John Anyone thinking of publishing a book, whether it be a family history or local history, which will be printed and sold or distributed, should be aware of three things you need to do as you get close to finalising the manuscript, i.e. once you have decided on the format, size, style, and know the number of pages: 1. Register for an ISBN See - http://www.thorpe.com.au/isbn/ 2. Request a CIP (Cataloguing in Publication number) from the National Library See - http://www.nla.gov.au/services/CIP.html 3. Allocate copies for legal deposit to the libraries required under the Copyright legislation - 4 libraries if you are in NSW See - http://www.nla.gov.au/services/ldeposit.html Most of us publish our books because we want all that work we have done to endure beyond our lifetime. We have a story that we want to tell, which we don't want to have end up in boxes in a cupboard. Publishing with an international registration via the ISBN, and on the NLA catalogue (CIP), with copies held in public libraries, will ensure that our work survives us. The rest of the books can be sold or given away to family, but it is the copies in our public libraries which will still be there in 100 years time, if someone searches the library catalogues. It may have to be pulled up out of the archives and be a bit dusty, but our work will be there for someone to build upon. I am NOT sure but FWIW: Towns & villages had an area of Common set aside for the people of the village to run their milking cow and or horse. These still exist in many towns around NSW. They are now fenced and managed a bit more than would have happened in 1888. These days a resident would own a few animals, these and those of his/her neighbours are all grazed together. A group decision is made by the "commoners" on numbers allowed each resident and grazing and husbandry matters. The common in the mining village of Tingha (near Inverell where I live) is famous for still including the streets of the village so the animals can sometimes be seen walking down the sleepy main street. This is really just a paddock of about 2000 acres with the village in the middle. And yes, the animals do have right of way. I believe commons are state land so the lands dept could clarify that. An old parish map of the Hamilton area may show the common. regards Glynis ----- Original Message ----- From: "H Dickinson" <hjaydee@gmail.com> To: <AUS-NSW-Hunter-Valley-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 02, 2006 5:52 PM Subject: Re: [HV] Hamilton Commonage > Hi Liz, > Definition of Commonage > Noun 1. commonage - property held in common > > I think you will find the location is Commonage (property held in > common) at Hamilton, NSW > > Hope this helps > Helen > > On 02/02/06, Liz Pritchard <pritchliz@bigpond.com> wrote: >> Could SKS tell me what the "Hamilton Commonage" was.
