    3. Hi Jo, Wyong and Lakes District Advocate was published in Wyong from 1921. Unfortunately the early years don't seem to be available anywhere. I know Wyong Shire Library and Gosford City Library both used to hold files but from the 1960s only, and a quick look at the online catalogues of the State Library of NSW and the National Library indicates imperfect holdings in both from the 1930s. 3. Hello listers, Last weekend I called into Jilliby Cemetery looking for a grave in the Presbyterian Section. Martin HEAGNEY died 10th Nov 1928, age 52, husband of Ellen PERRIN. Martin was the grandson of my convict ancestor also named Martin Heagney. Martin (jnr) was born 1876 and apparently ran the local picture theatre in Alison Road, Wyong. There is a cloud about his death, as he may have been blamed for the unexpected death of another family member. Anyway, can someone please suggest the name of the local newspaper of the time for the Wyong area ? I am hoping to find something in it about the picture theatre or his death. Many thanks, Jo from Sydney

    3. Dear List, Looking for any descendants and researchers of the family of Edward FALLON, who married Margaret Maher, 1855 Muswellbrook. Two of their sons, John and Thomas, marry into my main family of interest. John Fallon married Margaret Gallagher on 2 September 1880 in Tamworth. John Fallon was the son of Edward Fallon and Margaret Maher and was born in 1856 at Patricks Plains. John was also the brother of Thomas Fallon who married Julie's niece, Margaret Fogarty. John Fallon died in 1912 at Tamworth and it is believed that Margaret died in 1908 in Tamworth. Any help would be appreciated Carol Dale

    3. I've just subscribed to the list and while I now live in the UK, I have a lot of family connections to the Hunter Valley. My main line in the Hunter are the Cantwells and Brennans, but there are also strong links to the Kenna, McCrohon, Byrne/Byrnes and Cahill families back to the mid to late 1800s. After that, there are far too many different family names and connections to list. There's no one place connection as the families could be found in Newcastle, Kurri Kurri, Maitland, Singleton, Greta, Branxton, Cessnock and many other parts of the Hunter. Some subscribers to the list may know of people like Ted Cahill (police prosecutor at Maitland for some years and a keen bowler), the various Cantwell RC priests and nuns, or the author John Kenneth Cantwell. The Cantwells were also prominent butchers for many years. If anyone else has connections to these families, I'd be very interested in hearing from them and comparing notes. 3. For your info .....copied from the NSW SE mailing list For many years now librarians have been able to search the national database provided by the National Library of Australia, to discover which books are held by which library (to put it simply!) In late February a public version, accessible to all, was made available. http://librariesaustralia.nla.gov.au takes you to a search screen for the new service. The national database (the Australian National Bibliographic Database) lists over 40 million books, maps, pictures, microfilm, newspapers and more, in over 800 Australian libraries. Where the libraries know about a free online version of an item, you'll be able to click through from the catalogue record to the item. In other cases there's a list of libraries which hold the item, and you can click on the library name to find out more about that library. There are also links to online bookshops, and to loan and copy services. There is more information about Libraries Australia at http://www.nla.gov.au/librariesaustralia/ and you can read the full press release about the new service at http://www.nla.gov.au/pressrel/2006/la-launch.html The National Library also provides PictureAustralia (http://www.pictureaustralia.org) which many of you will already know, and is now harvesting images from the Flickr site, to which anyone can add images. Go to http://www.pictureaustralia.org/Flickr.html to learn more about how you can upload images of people, places and events which can then be selected for PictureAustralia. Since this facility was made available a few months ago over 2000 images have been loaded by members of the public, on subjects as diverse as an old tobacco farm at Myrtleford in Victoria, Australia Day celebrations, a surf carnival at Cronulla, as well as some scans of old photos of historic interest. 3. Hi Marg Roseanne and other list members Don't forget to have a look a jenny willets web site "FREE SETTLER OR FELON" you can check for names in the index and if you are lucky and they are mentioned as being listed in the Maitland Mercury the early ones are digitised and on line as well. She gives other sources as well such as T/L and C/F publictaions - a really great site that has proved invaluable to my research. There are several Thomas Ryan's mentioned from 1832 to 1848 with details included. regards Faye

Be more positive ! It will be a challenge to find out which one !. Suggest you get a transcription of this 1848 marriage and at least one other bapt of maybe Michael ? The National Library have digitised some 13 years issues of the Maitland Mercury newspaper to abt 1855. Would be worth checking to see if any marriage and birth notices for this RYAN family . 2. Roseanne Howard
    3. Hi everyone I was wondering if anyone has a Thomas Ryan married to an Elizabeth Burgan or a Mary Ann Bergan in their family tree. My paternal grandmother's mother's maiden name was Elizabeth Ryan. Elizabeth married James Smaills (various spellings of Smaills around) in 1874 at Cundletown - no parents names are listed on the marriage transcript. Elizabeth and James lived all their married life on the Manning River. Apparently Elizabeth was born either in Morpeth or Maitland depending on which certificate I look at, that is, her death certificate or the birth certificate of her first child. Elizabeth's mother is called Elizabeth Burgan on her death certificate but I have not been able to locate a marriage record on the BDM's for Thomas Ryan to Elizabeth Burgan. Also, Elizabeth's date of birth is unknown as her death certificate indicates she would have been born in 1844 but the age shown at time of marriage on the death certificate indicates she would have been born in 1846, then again she stated on her first child's birth registration that she was 20 at the time, therefore she would have been born in 1854. All together it make it very difficult to pinpoint when she would have been born. I took a punt on 1853 because there was a birth registration for an Elizabeth Ryan with father Thomas but mother Mary A and this is where I have come up with the Mary Ann Bergan. If anyone can help then it would be greatly appreciated as there appears to be a lot of Thomas Ryan's on BDM's and from the convict records available on the net a lot of men named Thomas Ryan were sent to the Hunter Region. I think it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack to find the one I am related to. Roseanne Howard Wauchope on the Hastings River --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Here is one of a few railway references I found in a retirement (from the railways) notice in the USA.
