Would they be the sons or brother of the Mine manager who had a house at Teralba.??? and has big white letters on the front "A.S." If so, I think there is some information on that family in the Teralba book by JEPSON available at Lake Macquarie & District Historical Society. MargaretB Lake Macquarie NSW Australia

    3. Hi Dan, Is your Jackie HOWE the shearer? If he is, there is a street named after him in the suburb of Macarthur in Canberra. Probably not much help in your research but I will bet there are not too many researchers that have a street named after one of their ancestors. Bye the way, it is called Jackie Howe Crescent. Cheers, John Caling Canberra -----Original Message----- From: Dan Howe [mailto:howed@bigpond.net.au] Sent: Monday, 24 April 2006 12:49 AM To: AUS-NSW-Hunter-Valley-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [HV] HOWE-BENDEL tree [Abt 1810-today] G'day My name is Dan Howe, I am just over 60 years old, am a retired Fire Service Officer, and I live at Strathpine outside Brisbane. A little while back I was asked about my Grandfather, John Robert 'Jackie' HOWE. Whilst I had a fair knowledge of 'Jackie' HOWE himself, I found I had a very limited knowledge of my genealogy and that such as I did have was mainly derived from my childhood recollections of 'family' stories and gatherings. I also found that, because of my age and placement in my family [a late born son], all of my parent's siblings and most of my parents cousins, nephews and nieces were deceased by the time I started this research, as were all but one of my six siblings. I had little factual or documented information available in such family records as had been passed on to me. Since that time I have been able to identify the names and varying level of information for some 200+ direct descendants of my G.G.Grandfather Abraham HOWE [b. Abt 1810] and his wife Mary BENDEL [b. Abt 1810; m. Abt 1835] extending to their 4th Great-Grandchildren. Whilst the details of later members will be filled in as they become available, I have had little success in locating detailed information in respect to some of the early family members. I have established that John HOWE ['Jackie' HOWE's father] was born in 1835 at Jerry's Plains, New South Wales. I have been unable to locate further details relating to his birth, nor any details relating to the births, deaths, or marriage of his parents [Abraham and Mary]. I have not been able to establish if there were any other children from this or subsequent marriages of either of this couple. John HOWE ['Jackie's father] was married in Killarney, Qld on 23 Jan 1860 to Louisa STOKES [b. Abt 1835, England?]. The next two generations of this couple [John and Louisa] lived predominately in the Queensland central-west areas around Killarney, Warwick and Blackall. Later generations tended to migrate towards Brisbane and south-east Queensland. I would be grateful to anyone who could help me with details or research contacts concerning this tree, particularly in respect to its early members, eg were Abraham and Mary the first of the line in Australia - if not, who was; when and where were they born, married, and die; did they have other children, if so who, when and where; I would also be grateful for any information concerning John Robert 'Jackie' HOWE's siblings:- Louisa Victoria HOWE b. 10 Jul 1863 [no further details] Susannah Jane HOWE b. 16 Oct 1865 [no further details] Mary HOWE b. 27 May 1868, d. 21 Sep 1912 [no further details] Emily HOWE b. 01 Jun 1873; possibly married a DONNELLY [no further details] I apologise for the length of this request for assistance but I have been 'brick-walled' for some time now in respect to early members and am in bad need of assistance. I am willing to share my research with any person who believes there may be a connection between our respective trees. I'm not sure yet. However today I have received several requests from 2 people today asking for information about families I know nothing about. Their e-mails were sent to your e-mail address but I received them. I take it that this should not have happened. With thanks for whatever needs to be done to rectify this. Beth Flenley

    1. Thomas and Emma Bourne
    2. The Flenleys
    3. Hello all I hope you can help me! Along with many others, my great great grandparents were Thomas and Emma Bourne who arrived in Sydney from London on the Palmyra on Sept 26 1838 with their eldest daughter, Myra. Initially Thomas was 'engaged' to a Mr Edward Sparkes in Maitland. I know that 5 or 6 more children were born : Matilda 1849, George 1843, James 1845, William 1846, Emma 1849 and possibly Henry who died in 1933, giving his parents as Thomas and Emma - and that the family gradually moved northwards - Scone, Patrick Plains, Murrurundi, Quirindi and Tamworth. Using the NSW BDM records I have been able to trace most of Thomas and Emma's children and grandchildren but if you have information about them I would be very glad to receive it. In the process of discovering their family, I can see that other Bourne families also lived in NSW. What I would particularly like to know is : were there other Bourne families living in the Quirindi/Tamworth area and if so, were they connected to Thomas and Emma? ie his brother perhaps. Emma, the youngest child, is my great grandmother. She married a Henry Bourne (parents given as Stephen and Mary Reece) in Sydney in 1870 and they soon moved to Melbourne where their family was born. I would love to know where Henry was born and as yet, can find no trace of his parents, nor of Emma's death in Victoria. As I am sure you well know this work is really fascinating and I look forward to any help you can give My thanks Beth Flenley ( maiden name - Bourne

    3. Dear Listers, Thank you so much to those who responded, both on-list and directly, with feedback to my recent 7-part series on my WFG Story. Further to that, some of you might have connections with the Hunter Valley families that some of the offspring of WFG and Anne finished up being. Sarah Ann married Henry Adam ARCHINAL at Rix's Creek on 24 May 1893 and they settled in Singleton. Henry was a policeman there. They had a son and 3 daughters. The first born, William Henry ARCHINAL moved to Brisbane and drove locomotives. Ellen (Nell) died of TB when only 18. Elsie Jane ARCHINAL married Jim JOLIFFE and they lived their lives at Gresford. Lilian Esther ARCHINAL married Bert COOPER and they lived at Five Dock in Sydney. Ellen (Nell) GOODHEW married John Edward Augustus HEWSTON on 1 Apr 1896 at Singleton Wesleyan. Sadly Nell died when only 33 and John remarried, but I know not to whom. He worked on the railway in the Hunter, mainly as a guard and he died at Tamworth in 1939. John and Nell had three girls. Florence May (Flo) married Albert FARLOW and had five children. When Albert died aged 39, Flo married Jack COSS. She lived to the ripe age of 97, mostly residing in north-west NSW at Inverell, Moree and surrounding places. Amy Eileen HEWSTON married Charles Leslie (Paddy) CUELL in 1916. They had twelve children and lived in Narribri. Her young sister, Nellie, married Walter George ROONEY, having six children and the family also lived at Narribri. I would be glad to hear from anybody connected with any of the above families. Happy researching! Ron Goodhew, Adamstown. 3. Hi Folks, I was wondering if anyone knows anything about a Robert WEBB - ex-convict who married Lydia SHAW (an ex-convict and widow of John SHAW) in 1844. I believe that Lydia changed her name to Edith Harriet or Harriet WEBB and both Robert and Lydia/Harriet died on a property called Gundebri or something simular to that. Harriet died in 1903 and Robert in 1881. I lost track of them both between 1844 & 1881 then lost Lydia/Harriet until I found her death in 1903. On the Upper Hunter Electoral Roll for 1870-71 I did find a Robert WEBB listed for at Mt Pleasant, Denman. Any information would be great, Many thanks in advance, Glynis Wheeler, Forest Hill, NSW __________________________________________________________________

    1. Brick Walls-falling - GOODHEW Pt7
    2. Ron Goodhew
    3. Dear Listers, This is Part Seven, the final instalment, of how my brick wall fell recently. I have told you a lot about my WFG, but not about his ancestry that this crashing brick wall revealed. As well as the British census records, the IGI and the Naval Records, there was to be even more to be uncovered. I was told of a new website created by the Medway Council. The River Medway is adjacent to the Hoo Peninsula on which my ancestors lived. Part of the website was sponsored by a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund (another indication of my good luck!). If you have ancestors in the Rochester Archdeaconry of Kent it will be a rewarding trip to take to: http:// cityark.medway.gov.uk/about/medway_archives/. Among other useful documents, it contains images scanned from Parish Register books of the region from the year 604AD to the present. It's an ongoing project, but fortunately for me, the church where my GOODHEWs attended was already digitised. I was able to download the pages that showed baptisms at St Werburgh, Hoo, of all nine children of the family of whom WFG was the youngest; Eliza (1826), George (1828), Emma (1830), Eleanor (1831), Samuel (1833), Edmund (1835), Harriet (1837), Ellen (1838) and my Francis (1840). I also found the marriage of their parents, George and Dorothy, at St. Nicholas, Strood on 22 May 1825. The baptism of George at St Werburgh in 1799 and his burial at the same church on 28 March 1852. Dorothy lived many more years and died at the Union Workhouse in Frindsbury. Her burial record for 7 April 1891 at All Saints Church was also on this website! George Snr had at least two brothers that I have been able to find; Abraham (older) and William (younger). The records show that their parents were Abraham GOODHEW and Mary ?. So that is where my brick wall has moved. But it is ever so much lower than that of WFG, which came tumbling down just months ago. More recently I have been able to use Google Earth to see fairly clear images of Hoo St Werburgh and North Street Hoo, where my ancestors lived. I can see the St Werburgh graveyard where George is buried, but sadly cannot read the inscription on his headstone. Again, I was lucky that the area around Medway was shown in high resolution on Google Earth. Many other parts of the globe, like the Hunter Valley of NSW, have yet to have hi-res photos taken from the satellites. But despite its weaknesses, Google Earth is a useful resource. If you would like to find out more, visit its website at: http://earth.google.com/ . You will probably need a broadband connection to use this fascinating facility with any success. Well, I believe I have broken down the WFG brick wall, but there are always those niggling doubts. Was that Francis GOODHEW really my WFG? On the positive side, his birth certificate showed exactly the date I had been carrying around for years. His naval service checked out with WFG's obit. His desertion of the merchant ship in Newcastle Harbour confirmed the rumour about WFG and his time of arrival in Oz was about right. On the negative front, WFG's death certificate shows his father's name as Edward and his age as 74 years, where we know he had a further three months to live to attain that age. But, did he talk to his family about his ancestors? They may never have known about George and Dorothy? Anyway, it would seem that the only sure way to dispel these doubts would be to conduct some DNA tests. Are there readers out there with experience of the use of DNA testing for genealogy? I understand that I need an unbroken male line to be sure of the results. That would mean that I would need to find a living male descendant of George (Jnr), Samuel, or Edmund in order to confirm this. As yet I haven't traced those lines, and may never be able to. I have found numerous living 3rd to 5th cousins from this exercise, but none of them descend from my male GOODHEWs. However, the lesson for readers here is that one should never give up. Even after years of frustration, you might just receive the handouts of luck, like the ones I was fortunate to find. I trust you have enjoyed my story and that it has inspired you to continue your search. Ron Goodhew, Adamstown.
