It is referring to Christ Church at Mt Vincent which was part of the Hexham parish/circuit at that early time. Traditionally, the direction of funerals went with being a cabinetmaker, because cabinet makers made coffins. Although cabinetmakers may disagree, there's not much of a leap from there to a carpenter making coffins. Although the deceased may have had literate family, part of the "service" provided by a funeral director is attention to such tasks as arranging for a death certificate. In my experience, funeral directors are most concerned with completing the task at hand, and have no interest in seeing that death certificates are the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. So I would treat the information supplied with circumspection. The name Dennis Tierney appears on the 1859 death certificate of an ancestor of mine, both as the informant and as the undertaker - she died and was buried at Dungog. I wondered if he was a relative, but have just found some details on him in a website called "The Balls of Galston." Dennis and his bride Eliza D'Arcy emigrated from Tipperary on the "China" in 1839. He was a carpenter and first worked for Sir William Mackay on Elizabeth Bay House in Sydney before settling in the new village of Dungog, where he was in business as both carpenter and undertaker. He was active in the local rifle club and was starter for the racing club. Wife Eliza died in 1858, leaving him and four children. I still don't know why he was the informant on the death certificate in question. Ellen had a husband and 10 children; I presume that some of them could write, and certainly Tierney was not related to us. Perhaps this information may be of interest to someone with a relative buried by Dennis at Dungog. He was born in 1811 and died in 1894. Ray

It appears that there was once an Anglican "Christ Church" at Hexham - circa 1830-40 at least. Does anyone know details of its existence please? Ray
Ellen Timson was born in London c1809; found guilty of pick-pocketing in 1829; transported for life and arrived on the "Lucy Davidson" on 29.11.1829. On 21.08.1832 she married David Bowerman at Hexham, living on Ash Island and Dempsey Island until his death in 1839. In 1840, she married Edward Stanton - aka Whitfield - and lived with him at Chichester. She died aged 50 on Christmas Day 1859 at the home of a daughter (probably Mary Egan) in Dungog. The death cert says that she was the wife of a farmer, and had 10 children living. She reputedly had 6 children by her first husband and 7 by her second, but only half her issue had their births registered. I believe that she had Mary, Sarah, Elisa, David and Bridget Bowerman (the last two died as infants) and that the Stanton children included Edward, John, James, Ellen, William and Martin. That appears to leave two children unaccounted for. Can any lister add to this information please? Ray

Hi Listers, I am just a lurker, but really interested in all that goes through here. I live in Maitland -have since I was born half way through the last century (hehe). But I have a feeling that Stockton was under the control of the Royal Newcastle Hospital, not James Fletcher, until maybe 15 years ago. There could be a chance that some of the earlier records could have gone to The Uni of Newcastle's Archival section, in their Library. Just a thought, but hope it may assist any Listers. kind regards David C Maitland Subject: [HV] Hunter Mental Hospital records > Dear Listers > > Thru research done earlier this year I know the patient records for > Morisset Hospital and Allandale, Cessnock , are located at the James > Fletcher Hospital, Newcastle > > mail address > Hunter New England Mental Health Service > Clinical Information Dept > PO Box 833 > NEWCASTLE 2300
I received this today from the Newcastle Library as I am doing research into Newcastle Caravans. "Thank you for your email regarding your research. Newcastle Caravans appears to have been established as Caravan Builders in 1954., at 293 Maitland Rd Mayfield West. The business continued changing to Caravan Hirers in 1959, and Walsh’s Caravan Park in 1973 and continued to be listed until 1986 Reference: UBD New England , North, North West N.S.W various editions 1953 - 1986" I have just purchased a vintage caravan made by Newcastle Caravans. If anyone would like to see it its at http://www.angelfire.com/planet/caravans/photos/ I also have ancestors Jones from Mayfield. Regards Kathryn

Hi, I would be interested in this as well. My great-grandmother and her husband were based there in the 1930's. He was, I am told, the Manager (as a pyschiatric nurse). My great-grandmother had been matron at several psychiatric hospitals but was not working here at Stockton I believe. Names were David EDWARDS and Marion Kate EDWARDS Regards Louise Melbourne ----- Original Message ----- From: "Anne Calvert" <anne@tpg.com.au> To: <AUS-NSW-Hunter-Valley-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, May 19, 2006 9:50 AM Subject: [HV] Stockton Mental Hospital / teacher records > > Hi List > > > > Would someone be able to tell me where I might be able to > > access records of Stockton Mental Hospital pre 1947 - > > also teacher records 1920's - 1940's. > > Thanks > Anne > > > ==== AUS-NSW-Hunter-Valley Mailing List ==== > For other AUS mailing lists go to > http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/AUS > >
