    1. Re: [HV] Wills
    2. Ray
    3. Hello Dianne. Here are a couple of thoughts which might assist you. First: The Probate Division of the Supreme Court used to write out handwritten TRANSCRIPTS (with all of the mistakes which occur in this process) into large A3-sized books, of each Will which they held on file. When I started genealogy almost 40 years ago, anyone could access these at the Probate Office in Sydney. At a later stage they withdrew them from public availability. Now that the Probate Office has sent its older Probate packages to NSW State Records, I do NOT know whether they have also sent those books across, or retained them. It is likely that these are the "Will Books" which you wrote about below. Accordingly, I would recommend a phone call to each entity to ascertain their whereabouts. The bottom line is that if the Will packet is no longer extant, you should be able to read a transcript of the original Will in those books. You will need the details which you have also given below; namely: "Andrew MOORE died in 1891 Probate Ref 1636 Series 4". Please note that there was and still is NO central registry in NSW where Wills are filed. The NSW Registrar-General has now made a provision for people to be able to file notifications with them of the LOCATIONS of current Wills, but there is no compulsion to do so, and as far as I know the contents of those Wills are not part of that process. Secondly: As you said that your ancestor had substantial LAND dealings, you may be lucky enough to find lots of records (perhaps including a Will, but don't bank on it) in the Old System Titles records for the subsequent SALES of his land. Good Luck with this pursuit. Ray in Sydney. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dianne Myers" <dmyers@exemail.com.au> To: <AUS-NSW-Hunter-Valley-L@rootsweb.com> ... for a copy of the Will? 3. Hi Last year I found a reference to a probate packet for my 2 x great grandfather Andrew MOORE. Armed with the appropriate reference number from the Probate Index, I visited State Records at Kingswood and was sadly told that the particular Probate Packet in question no longer existed. There was a Deceased Estate File which showed that he died owning a considerable amount of land in the Inverell area. Could someone tell me where I could look for a copy of the Will? Would I find it in the Will Books? Do I have to go to State records to access these Will Books and is there an index to these? Andrew MOORE died in 1891 Probate Ref 1636 Series 4 Thankyou for help on this. Regards, Dianne

    3. Hi all I have read the emails about location of St Vincents. When looking through some family files yesterday I came across a photocopy given to me of the death notice of Mary Ann Slade of Raymond Terrace. I believe that this family remained largely in the Hunter district and have always assumeed that Mt Vincent was there as the deaths of the relevant family died in the Hunter area. I have copied the notice: Port Stephens Examiner, 13 September 1901 Death of Mrs. J. Slade - The area is remarkable for the heavy mortality rate, and probably when the statistics it will be found to be many percentages ahead of previous years. We have to announce yet another death yet among our towns people, that of Mrs. John Slade, of Irrawang St., which occurred on Wednesday last, from diabetes, after a short illness, at the age of 73 years. Mrs. Slade, who was married twice, was the mother of Messrs. G. White (Tea Gardens), D. and E. White (Richmond River), S. White (Williamtown), Mrs. R. McKenzie of Nelson's Plains, Mrs. S. Moxey (Williamtown) Mrs. J. White of this town and the Messrs. Slade of Williamtown and Mount Vincent. The remains were followed by a large number of residents from surrounding districts to the Wesleyan cemetery, where internment took place. [Note haqndwritten on notice - Mrs. Slade was only 69 and this was corrected in the paper on Friday, 20 September 1901. Mrs Slade was also the mother of Mrs. Shearman of Fullerton Cove.) 2. Diane Cole
    3. I just thought you all might like to know I found my Robert MARTIN - he was the one who died at Captains Flat in 1888, much earlier than I expected. I also found he was made insolvent in 1881 after being sued for 550 pounds. I guess they did not get their money anyway, as his affadavit listed his only assets as "apparel 5 pounds". His income was listed as 50/- per week with living expenses of 40/- per week. In 1888, he was a publican in Captains Flat and died of Delerium Tremens. His estate was reckoned at 176-10-7 (including 70pounds goodwill of business, so the pub was doing okay) and his debts at 176-17-6. So one mystery solved, but lots of interesting bits and pieces to follow up Diane

I have had contact from a distant relative who could identify two of the witnesses at the wedding. One witness was Maria's sister, present under her married name and her husband. But....thanks for the suggestion. I did try to check the convicts listed on St Vincent, but the ship's name was not highlighted. However, I am pretty sure that Michael Leary (O'Leary) did come from Cork - but there was more than one Michael Leary/O'Leary who came from Cork. I hve to find which one. Thanks for the suggestion. 3. Hi Jan I cannot think of anywhere in Sydney known as St Vincent's, other than the hospital area. The Catholic Church owned a tract of land stretching from Oxford St, between Darlinghurst & Paddington, almost to Kings Cross, up until about 1980 - they probably still do. This area was much larger than that taken up by the hospital alone, at least as I recall from that time. My understanding is that the terrace houses they purchased were intended as dwellings for the poor & hospital staff. This presumably included nurses. The only thing is that the 1830's seems a bit early for all this to have happened. What remains of the houses there now would seem likely built late 1800's. Was Maria a nurse? There might be a clue in that French name?? 3. Hello Peter and all Maybe it could be Mount Vincent, but it does say St Vincents. I have looked up the Lands Department's new website and they are processing old Parish Maps. There is a County of St Vincent, but the map has not been processed as yet. I checked Parish of St Vincents in 'Google' and came up with Parish of St Vincent's, Ashfield, but this was established 58 years after the marriage in 1836. I checked County of St Vincent in 'Google' and came up with the Jervis Bay area of New South Wales. Even St Vincent's Hospital was established later than 1836. Thank you for your suggestions.
