    3. Hello Tracey, There was a Railway Station at Honeysuckle in the early 1900s; it was situated between today's Civic & Wickham Railway Stations, around the area of Lee Wharf West. Blane was the early name for Hunter Street. Regards, Ian Wright

    2. Jamboree
    3. Hi everyone A simple google search came up with the answer re Blane Street. That part of Hunter Street betw. Brown St. and Cottage Ck. after Mr. Blane - dep. govenor of A. A. Co. Honeysuckle Point - Name given to the area adjacent to Newcastle Harbour due to the fact that the native plant growing there looked like a Honeysuckle flower. Later removed to make way for the construction of Lee Wharf. This indicates the area around Civic which is where the Honeysuckle Goods Yards and Lee Wharves were located and is now been redeveloped into housing etc See the site below which gives details for a lot of places in the Newcastle area http://www.ncc.nsw.gov.au/services/culture/library/research/localstudies/pla ce.cfm Best wishes Jan _____ From: AUS-NSW-Hunter-Valley-D-request@rootsweb.com [mailto:AUS-NSW-Hunter-Valley-D-request@rootsweb.com] Sent: Saturday, 24 June 2006 5:00 AM To: AUS-NSW-Hunter-Valley-D@rootsweb.com Subject: AUS-NSW-Hunter-Valley-D Digest V06 #141

    1. TICKET-OF-LEAVE FOR WOMEN CONVICTS
    2. Raymond Andrews
    3. Thank you to those who responded to my query. I have since found an answer on Leslie Uebel's website, which states that conditions for issue of a T-of-L were the same for men and women convicts - except that females had to serve a much shorter period of probation than males did. Regulations issued on 17.03.1829 and contained in a circular to magistrates dated 4.09.1829 set out that female convicts who had "uninterrupted good conduct in service, in the married state, or as monitresses in the Female Factory" could apply as follows; After 2 years, if under a sentence of 7 years; 3 years, do 14 years; 4 years, if serving a life sentence. Another circular issued on 11.09.1829 closed a loophole for pregnant women (not living with their husbands) because it was perceived that "bearing illegitimate children would have been rendered a qualification for obtaining a Ticket of Leave." So, while it helped if she was married and living with her husband, I understand that she was still required to meet the regular conditions of having a T-of-L. I found when I searched for "Ellen" on the ASG site that quite a few ladies with that given name had been granted a ticket - including my ancestor Ellen Timson, who had a husband and five children by the time she got it in 1839, ten years after receiving her life sentence. 3. Can any lister tell me if women convicts were eligible to receive a T-of-L and/or a pardon? Did marriage absolve them of the normal conditions of regularly reporting to the police? My curiosity relates to a couple of female ancestors, but I don't recall spotting any girl's names when I've looked through other records. Ray

    3. Hi, Would the Mr Slade of Mt Vincent of your obit be John Slade who married Selina Osland? Selina was born & raised at Mt Vincent (near Kurri Kurri) and at some point after her marriage she moved to Williamtown where they had a dairy farm. I know John Slade came from a large family in the Williamtown area. I have details on the Osland family. When looking through some family files yesterday I came across a photocopy given to me of the death notice of Mary Ann Slade of Raymond Terrace. I believe that this family remained largely in the Hunter district and have always assumeed that Mt Vincent was there as the deaths of the relevant family died in the Hunter area. I have copied the notice: Port Stephens Examiner, 13 September 1901 Death of Mrs. J. Slade - The area is remarkable for the heavy mortality rate, and probably when the statistics it will be found to be many percentages ahead of previous years. We have to announce yet another death yet among our towns people, that of Mrs. John Slade, of Irrawang St., which occurred on Wednesday last, from diabetes, after a short illness, at the age of 73 years. Mrs. Slade, who was married twice, was the mother of Messrs. G. White (Tea Gardens), D. and E. White (Richmond River), S. White (Williamtown), Mrs. R. McKenzie of Nelson's Plains, Mrs. S. Moxey (Williamtown) Mrs. J. White of this town and the Messrs. Slade of Williamtown and Mount Vincent. The remains were followed by a large number of residents from surrounding districts to the Wesleyan cemetery, where internment took place. [Note haqndwritten on notice - Mrs. Slade was only 69 and this was corrected in the paper on Friday, 20 September 1901. Mrs Slade was also the mother of Mrs. Shearman of Fullerton Cove.)
