    3. And I will go along Frederick St tomorrow and see what is there now, There are definitely no Churches in that street now. As houses are sold they are usually pulled down and rebuilt, as seaside mansions. Frederick St is very close to Merewether Beach, in fact one part of the street overlooks the beach and baths, roll on summer. 3. Firelighter was just that - an occupation within the Railways or any other industry that had boilers The Firelighter lit up and brought into steam a loco or a boiler . Around Newcastle when coal pits only worked week days the railways knocked out the fires on afternoon shift Fridays and firelighters relit them again afternoon shift on Sundays. This also gave the Boilermakers time to work on boilers out of steam At Broadmeadow and Port Waratah Locomotive Depots there was a firelighter on every shift 7 days a week to light fires in Locomotives that came back into service from boiler washout or ex repairs. In the case of Broadmeadow depot there were two firelighters per shift with a total of ten on the roster at any one time Port Waratah only had one man per shift and a total of six on the roster Civic Rail workshops also had a firelighter roster of four and they only had one steam crane loco to light but had to light all the blacksmiths forges each morning For the Blacksmiths shop they had a three man roster Cardiff Workshops also had a roster of four This is just the Railways but I would assume that the heavy industries also had the same arrangements Regards John Shirley & John Smith Maitland Area Lower Hunter Valley NSW Australia -----Original Message----- From: H Dickinson [mailto:hjaydee@gmail.com] Sent: Saturday, July 22, 2006 2:49 PM To: AUS-NSW-Hunter-Valley-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [HV] MEREWETHER / OCCUPATION Hi Karen, I've just located a Title Deed number for this address and will have a look at the Title Deed during the week and let you know who owned the property in 1921. 3. Greetings I have just been looking at the State Library of NSW web site to see if they hold copies of a now defunct newspaper, and came across this piece of information. "Access to databases from home From July to October 2006 the State Library is offering trial access from home to the following selection of databases for residents of New South Wales. To participate you must be a New South Wales resident and also be registered as a State Library client. If you are not a registered client of the Library, you can apply online. You will need to allow up to 10 days to receive your Reader's Card before you can use these databases from home." 3. Hi list Could someone familiar with early Hunter Valley place names tell me where Swan Reach is/was? I did a google search and only came up with a place on the Murray River but as I have three baptisms for the East Maitland parish of the Catholic Church were the abode is listed as Swan Reach I can only assume that the village has since changed its name. The period I am looking at is 1849-1855. Incidently I have a transcript for one of these baptisms and it states the child was born at Morpeth. Aso is/was the place Patterson close to Swan Reach during the same time frame. Thank you for your assistance. 3. Dear Carole, For privacy reasons, there are very strict guidelines for accessing records associated with adoption. As far as I know, only adopted persons and birth parents of adopted persons are allowed access. If the adopted person or birth parent is deceased, a very close relative (eg sibling) can apply to inherit the deceased persons rights. This is better explained by Post Adoption Resource Centre website www.bensoc.asn.au/parc Regards, Wayne. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Carole Douch" <douch1@dodo.com.au> To: <AUS-NSW-Hunter-Valley-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, 21 July 2006 11:37am Subject: [HV] adoption > Is there any way of finding out about a child being born and adopted out in 1945/50. > > thanks > > Carole > NSW
