Dear Tracie, Just checking NSW BD&M records the Agnes Singleton born in 1895 at Gunnedah was Agnes R. not Agnes K.; daughter of Benjamin SINGLETON (1848-1934) & Eliza Agnes SMYRK ( married 1879 in Mudgee). She is the only Agnes Singleton birth recorded from 1800-1905. Her father Benjamin was the son of William Singleton (1805-1883) & Matilda Thomas.William was the brother of Benjamin Singleton (1788-1853) who explored with John Howe. This Benjamin's son, also Benjamin (1817-1889) was married to Eliza Campbell HORNE who died in 1862; Benjamin remarried Ann SULLIVAN in 1868 & altogether had 14 children with the 2 wives; none of whom was named Agnes Kathleen or Kathleen Agnes. I only have 2 Agnes in my records, both of whom married Singletons (My G. G. Grandmother also married into the family); in her obituary does it say if she was a wife, widow or Spinster? I would be interested if you could send a copy of the obituary to me. Sorry not to be able to solve your problem at this time; keep at it!! Regards, Ian Wright.
I have been doing a bit of family history and have come up with the Singleton family yet again. The one I am trying to find out who belongs to whom is Agnes Kathleen Singleton born 1895 at Mullally NSW daughter of Benjamin and Eliza. In her obituary it says that she was the Great Grand-daughter of Benjamin Singleton who with John Howe discovered Singleton NSW. On the BDM is says Agnes R Singleton born in Gunnedah daughter of Benjamin and Eliza Singleton, it also says that she was the youngest of 18 which is also where I get confused. Any help would be very much appreciated Tracie King

Is there someone on the list with current local knowledge about the area known as Roughit near Scott's Flat, who can tell me WHERE the property known as "The Olives" is located please? I am tracing 3 lots of land; 1. 102 acres is on the corner of Scotts Flat Road & Glendon Road backing onto the Hunter River 2. 1+ acres is next door on Glendon Rd also backing onto the Hunter River. 3. 29+ acres part of Robert SCOTT's original 2060 acre grant - still to identify it's exact location although I suspect from it's description, it is near by the other 2 properties and might?? be next door to the 1+ acre lot. It could be further along Glendon Rd towards Glendon Lane because it's about there that's the boundary dividing the Helenus & Robert SCOTT Properties. 1 & 2 are on Helenus SCOTT's original 2090 acre grant. One of these 3 properties is believed to be "The Olives" I have looked at the land records (Old System Title unfortunately has no drawn plans) for these 3 properties which have been in the same family for a long time, but no mention of the property name. Can anyone tell me which one please? - with an address would be a huge bonus!! Much appreciated Thanks in advance Helen
Greetings from the "Coral Sea Coast" (Lat 17.5s Long 146.1e) Hi to All, Just to report that the reponses to my message re the TICKLE family of Dungog have been very fruitful. The descendants that I have recorded for John and Ann TICKLE nee Cole now number some 350, and counting. One negative that I have been able to establish is that the manuscript held at the Newcastle library and entitled, "History of James and Matilda Tickle, their family and activities" compiled and edited by Mollie Young 1986, DOES NOT refer to the family of that name that I am investigating. James and Matilda Tickle are not part a of this family. I am still anxious to obtain any anecdotal information and photographs (or scans) of the original Dungog family. Best wishes, Dean And may your opportunities be taken Dean Newman, North Queensland Australia. "As time goes by" kenyon@znet.net.au "Old Deans never die - they just lose their faculties"
Hello all, A few years ago I heard Dr Bob James of Tighes Hill speak at a family history conference in Newcastle on the topic of friendly and benefit societies, of which the Foresters is one. He is an authority on the subject, has written widely on it and I thought he had a web page but I just can't find it at the moment :-P . However you might find the following local website of interest for general info on the subject although not specifically on the Foresters : www.fraternalsecrets.org HTH Judy
Would listers be kind enough to send any replies to the list please? My great grandfather, James William BARDEN was a Trustee of the Ancient Order of Foresters when he died in May 1908. Hi Vicki My father was a member of this Friendly Society too. He lived in Rockhampton in Queensland, and most of the extended family also belonged. I have his original membership certificate. An extremely beautiful piece of artwork. In 2000 I saw an advertisement in the Australian Family Tree Connection magazine, looking for people with ancestors who were members of this society. To cut a long story short - I contacted the person making the enquiry, and he sent me a copy of an article from the Family Tree Magazine of December 1996, Indexers and their indexes, The Ancient Order of Foresters by Martin Sommers. The article details the history of the Order, its origins in Yorkshire, and the information that there is a Foresters Heritage Trust in Southampton, with the appropriate address and contact person's name. The gentleman I wrote to also sent me a copy of the first anniversary meeting of Court "Pride of Australia", Cow Hotel, Parammatta, which was held on Monday, 27 July 1857. You are welcome to copies of these articles. I'll Email you off list, with details of the person I contacted. I purchased the above CD for a lady who had requested about two months ago since she has still not sent me the money, the first person who would like it, it is yours. Cost $10 plus about $2.50 postage within Australia. Regards Tracie King
Is there anyone researching the above family from the Scone area. Thanks in advance. Tracie King
Hi Karen I had a look at 61 Frederick St to day, it is a house on the corner of Frederick and Coane St Merewether. I grew up not far from there and when I saw the house I remembered that people by the name of Newburn used to live there, in the late 1950's. The house has not changed from those years Something to consider the people you are researching may have been married in the house as a private residence and the Baptist minister came to marry them there. There was however a Baptist church in Merewether in the early 1900's according to my wife's almanac and there is still one in Merewether. I had family married in a family home in Hamilton in a period earlier than your research and they were married according to the rites of the Presbyterian Church by a Presbyterian Minister. I don't know why because both parties were Church of England, but she was expecting and the C of E Priest may have said no. Hope this helps Howard ----- Original Message ----- From: "Karen Bamforth" <karentherese@ozemail.com.au> To: <AUS-NSW-Hunter-Valley-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, July 22, 2006 1:46 PM Subject: MEREWETHER / OCCUPATION > Hi, > > Does anyone know if the following address would have been a church? > > 61 FREDERICK STREET, MEREWETHER > > I have a marriage in 1921 that took place there & was after a photo of it > if it was a church. > The religion on the cert. says - BAPTIST > > Also, while I'm asking - > > does anyone know what the following occupation means = > > FIRELIGHTER > > this was in 1926 in WALLSEND > > Thanks in advance! > > Karen Bamforth. > karentherese@ozemail.com.au > > ______________________________
Hi Dean, We have had contact before at some stage because I recognise your name. I have a connection through marriage to Henry TICKLE, son of John and Ann. He is the one who lived at Quirindi. I have a bit of info on some of the other TICKLEs but am particularly interested in contact with any of Henry's descendants. I'm organising a reunion for his wife Grace SUTHERLAND's family in October. Can we help each other? Do you know all John and Ann's children for instance or can I help there? Lynette Lynette Begg P.O. Glynis Wheeler asked about a marriage Halcrow to Anderson in Murrurundi in 1930. The BDM record number is 4132/1930
Roseanne, The locals do call the area Swan Reach although it is actually a bend in the Hunter River south east of Hinton. Hinton is not far from Morpeth and East Maitland. You can see it on http://www.lands.nsw.gov.au/OnlineServices/ParishMaps/default.htm Click on "search for and view" and enter "Seaham" for parish name. Two results will come up, click on the one for the Parish (County Durham). Select "Sheet 1" and zoom in to bottom left. I did a google search and only came up with a place on the Murray River but as I have three baptisms for the East Maitland parish of the Catholic Church were the abode is listed as Swan Reach I can only assume that the village has since changed its name. The period I am looking at is 1849-1855. Incidently I have a transcript for one of these baptisms and it states the child was born at Morpeth. Aso is/was the place Patterson close to Swan Reach during the same time frame. Thank you for your assistance.
