Hi Could you own the girl in the photo? Those last few posting I sent in regards to the Newspaper (Possibly the Maitland Mercury ) were glued to the hard backing of an old photo. Again, I am not related to this person but I couldn't leave her sitting in the shop as she had her three distinctive christian names as well as the word Mum written in brackets above one of two matching photos. So I bought both photos in the hope that I could track down her family. Yes, I am a family history addict, and yes, my husband just rolled his eyes at me! "Grace Gwendolen Amelia (Mum)" Someone must own her. Because of the Maitland/Beresfield clues on the back I thought I should post her details to this list in case. I think it was taken in about 1920s, but my estimate only. The BDM index has a Grace Gwendolen Amelia Small marrying a Ronald John Jones at Ryde in 1944. I wonder if this is her? I purchased two Large copies of the same photo here in Lithgow and am eager for them to be returned to her family. Both are on hard board backing and one has the newspaper on the back. It was taken at 'The Exchange Studios 47-49 Piit St, near Circular Quay, Sydney NSW' She is a dear little blonde thing aged about 2. I have already posted this previously on the Sydney list with no luck and someone has kindly checked the electoral rolls for me. Too many Ronald Jones and no Grace Jones. WORKMAN ELECTROCUTED AT BLACK HILL Fatal results followed attempts by Walter Ernest Schumacher, 23, Fitter, of Brett-street, Waratah, to disconnect the wiring on a building at the Veterinary Hospital, Black Hill, yesterdaay Morning. The building had been sold on Saturday at a dospersal sale and Schimacher and his brother had commenced demolition early yesterday morning. Assuming that the power had been cut off, Schumacher was on the roof and attempted to cut the wires preparatory to laoding the building on a motor truck . eceiving the full force of electricity, he sang out, but collapsed when his brother pulled him clear . After artificial respiration had failed to revive him, Schumacher was placed on the Lorry and driven towards Maitland Hospital. At Campbell's Hill the Maitland Ambulance met the lorry and the Ambulance Officers transferred to the Lorry, sustaining the artificial respiration movement. On arrival a the hospital, Schumachr was placed in the Iron Lung for further respiratory treatment but failed to revive. Deceased was a single man employed by Goninan's, Newcastle and had decided to remove the building yesterday on account of the prevalence of thefts from buildings recently sold. regards Tracey Reed Lithgow NSW

There are some quite interesting books, postcards etc relating the the history of Maitland & Singleton, on ebay at the moment. One book in particular is the History of the Catholic Church in Singleton. There's also a couple of postcards with early views of High St. Might be worth a look. Regards Helen

Hi list, I appreciate for those with no connections it will not be all that relevant but for those with British ancestry, the Yesterdays site contains thousands of names of folks many of whom were strays or strangers, away from their recognised abode or expected parish. The Settlement Certificates and particularly the Settlement Examinations give a good account of what can be found in Record Offices and if you have any such overseas connections with the UK they are well worth the effort in trying to see if such a document(s) survives for your ancestors, particularly if they have "moved". It may be they are even within this list, but if not, it still gives a good idea of what can be found in their respective parishes and County Record Offices. Bastardy records may name the father, Apprenticeships let you know who the young lads and lasses went to serve, some as young as seven years. There may be instances of Apprentices running away because of cruelty on behalf of the Master. Removal documents record those folks who fell on hard times and were removed back to their last legal Settlement. Thousands were moved all over the Country. mike http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~spire/Yesterday/index.htm

Hi List, Does anybody know the name of the Anglican church Where G.K.RUSDEN was the minister in December 1838 Regards Wal
Dear Listers While looking for something else yesterday in the MM 5 Nov 1874 I came across LOCAL NEWS ( edited) Purchase of the Maitland Mercury newspaper and business was sold yesterday at the Exchange Hotel, Sydney, by public auction by Messrs BRUNKER & SPARKE for the sum of £10,150 . The sale was made by the Trustees of the late Mrs Alexandra PILE, by the direction of his honour the Primary Judge in Equitity , under the provisions of Mrs PILE's will ( Must be an interesting probate packet out at Kingswood ??? ) As the extensively advertised to sell has excited naturally a good deal of speculative talk as to the comparative value of newspapers, we may mention of the following facts The Mercury has changed hands 5 times In 1854 Mr Richard JONES, one of the best business men in the Colony, then sole proprietor, offered it for sale . and it was sold to TUCKER, CRACKNELL and PILE at 3 years purchase- that is at for the total sum of 3 times of the then yearly surplus receipts In 1862 , 1864 & 1868 , portions of the property changed hands between the partners of 3 1/2 to 4 years surplus receipts The legal transfer of the property from the Trustees to the current ( 1874) buyers Messrs TUCKER, GILLIES & THOMPSON ( all Mercury men) will probably not take place till the end of this week to allow time for the necessary legal paperwork to be done Bye MargM Hunter Valley List Admin
