    3. Listers, I would like to thank those who responded to my query on the Wesleyan Church. Some interesting facts were revealed, but I have yet to confirm whether it was the Tyrrell Street church (demolished in 1903) that was the place of marriage of my GGPs in 1866, as opposed to any other Wesleyan Church in the district, eg. Hamilton Wesley. > Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2006 19:42:01 +1000 > From: "MargaretB" <mbergies@kooee.com.au> > Subject: Re: [AUS-NSW-HUNTER-VALLEY] Newcastle Wesleyan Church > Just two from a google search, looks like the first one is your > time period. > > http://www.jenwilletts.com/Timeline1797.htm > 1844 > > Wesleyan church built in Newcomen Street, Newcastle. According to the State > Library, this is the Tyrrell Street church. This church is also > depicted in James Colwell's Illustrated Histroy of Methodism and is > described as "the first chapel (Wesleyan) in Newcastle". Although the State Library might think it's the Tyrrell Street church, I have access to a few illustrations and photos of that church and it was a much more imposing structure. The 1844 panorama shows an expanse of water in the background that would not be visible from the Tyrrell Street location. > Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2006 21:05:58 +1000 > From: "MargaretB" <mbergies@kooee.com.au> > There is a painting of the church in the Illuminated address to > William > Arnott. > > http://libapp.sl.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/spydus/ENQ/PM/FULL1?152904,I Another marvellous reference. That glorious certificate issued to William ARNOTT and his wife upon their departure from Newcastle in 1899 shows clearly the church in question on its lower-right corner. There is another church at its upper-right corner which I cannot identify, but it must have been another in the Newcastle Wesleyan Circuit. > Date: Fri, 18 Aug 2006 23:46:54 +1000 > From: "Diane" <dianep@optusnet.com.au> > Subject: Re: [HV] Newcastle Wesleyan Church >> From John Bingle's Past and Present Records of Newcastle : > "the Wesleyan Church was built in Newcomen Street in 1844; the first > minister was the Rev. To quote some more from Diane (Thanks). This mentions the 1844 chapel in Newcomen Street and "the new church" it refers to will be the Tyrrell Street church on which I wish to focus. I had carelessly ignored the Marriage Certificate's vital info about the 'officiating minister', which I now see was William T. Mayne. Does that ring any bells for you? Thanks again for the valuable clues. Ron Goodhew Adamstown.

    3. Hello there, this seems to be a big coincidence to me. I work at 43 Brunker Road, Broadmeadow (Brunker Road runs through Adamstown and Broadmeadow) in a very old house that is now a community mental health service. According to the history of the place it was originally the house of a prominent Adamstown identity, then was used as a private maternity hospital, before becoming an Aboriginal youth refuge, and then finally bought and used by various mental health services. This history was told to me by an old lady whose grandparents lived in the house next door (which is now a vacant lot). >From the street it looks like just an ordinary old house but is quite large and was extended in the 1960s or 70s when it became the Aboriginal refuge. I wonder whether this was the Arlington Private Hospital you referred to? Particularly given that I had heard it was used as a private hospital long before I ever saw this email... If you could get the street number that would act as confirmation. Hmmmm Sean Halpin >Arlington Private Hospital in Brunker Road, Adamstown. 3. Hello Listers Just need a bit of guidance as to where I would start looking for the hospital and inquest records relating to Catherine Lilley (nee Carmody) who died from chronic dysentry in the "Benevolent Asylum" on 22 November 1859 (as per death certificate) . Her death certificate has a note that an inquest into her death was held. The certificate gives no clues as to the whereabouts of this "Benevolent Asylum" or the "Presbyterian Cemetery" where she was buried. Catherine lived in the Patrick Plains, Singleton area and I'm assuming that it was the Maitland Benevolent Asylum. The doctor who certified the death was a Dr Gilhooley? who states he was the Resident Surgeon at the Asylum. I've searched the NSW State Records site and cannot find anything about the Maitland Asylum. Also Catherine left behind two daughters Sarah aged 11 and Maryanne aged 15. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what may have happened to these children? I've had no luck with online orphan records. (Catherine's husband John had died in 1850 and as both Catherine and John were ex convicts they had no other relatives in Australia that I am aware of). Sorry to be a bit long winded but I wanted to give you all as much detail as I could in the hope that it may ring some bells. Cheers Wendy

    3. Hi I just happen to run into a friend yesterday who works for the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney and he mentioned that not so long ago one of the curators from the Powerhouse had been asked to catalogue the Arnott's archives. He said it was quite a big job as all they had done was store everything, in no particular order in a big room. It was very weird to come home and find a message posted about Arnott's. Anyway it may be worth contacting the Powerhouse. Regards, Dianne

    3. Hi there Karen, my ancestor's siblings were left as children at the Benevolent Asylum in Sydney. They were also a Newcastle family, so I don't think it is unlikely that your ancestor would have wound up there even if she was from Maitland. I believe the records of the Asylum are at the Mitchell library in Sydney. I think you have to pay a donation of around $30 and gain a letter of permission to access these, and many were destroyed. There is a book about the Benevolent Asylum, and it has a picture of the building dating from around 1901. This was also at the Mitchell library. (By the way, records detailing the foster arrangements for my family (HALPIN) were on Microfiche at the Western Sydney Archives, and this is what tipped me off for the Benevloent Asylum connection. I am sure that this is the place you are after. Now re: West Wallsend Cemetery Taken from Newcastle Family History Society Inc (1993). Gravestone inscriptions in the lower Hunter Valley New South Wales Volume One: West Wallsend Cemetery. I would also like to point out that some of my relatives I know are buried at West Wallsend (e.g., from death certificates) are not listed in this source, which I suspect is compiled mainly from headstone information. Therefore, don't discount the possibility of there being more Robinsons buried there without a tombstone. The book also has a map of the cemetery - you could get a copy from the Newcastle Family History Society, or perhaps from the Newcastle Regional Library. Hope this helps, Sean Halpin Belmont, NSW (Researching: BOUNDY; STEWART, Andrew and family of West Wallsend; WARDLE; HALPIN; HEDLEY of Adamstown and Abermain; WAILES of Adamstown and Abermain; MILLER, Tobias and family of West Maitland; CONNOLLY of Cessnock and Pokolbin; KING of Cessnock)

    3. Hello Wendy, Could you please tell be able to advise where you got Dr Gilhooley's name? I recall there was a Doctor Stolworthy who was part of the Singleton Benevolent Society in the 1840's. There is some similarity. Particularly if you have seen some documents and tried to determine a name from a signature. Kind regards, David Cooke, Maitland, NSW. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Wendy" <oziewoo@bigpond.net.au> To: "Hunter Valley List" <AUS-NSW-Hunter-Valley-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, August 21, 2006 9:57 AM Subject: [HV] Maitland Asylum > The doctor who certified the death was a Dr Gilhooley? who states he was > the Resident Surgeon at the Asylum.
