"Mines, Wines & People" by W S Parkes et al refers to both having the first name of John, so don't overlook a 'wrong' first name. >4. You've clearly done lots of research, but perhaps have overlooked a considerable amount of on-line info available here in Oz. Try Google but see if you can restrict the search to Oz sites. Try general searches first, like "Hunter Valley History". State Records in particular will point you to repositories you might need to visit for in depth info - you'll need to prepare. It might be worthwhile contacting Cessnock Library & Uni of Newcastle library to see what they have & possibly pre arrange a visit. Above all soak up the atmosphere & beauty of the Lower Hunter - it really is a very pleasant place to stay. Enjoy! Glenn Collyer (Sunny Sydney!)

    1. [HV] Re James Hicks
    2. Hello Chris, No doubt you have been swamped with advice - here is my tuppence worth. Jen Willett's web site has many pages referring to the Hunter Valley. This is the home page which has a search facility - http://www.jenwilletts.com/index.htm http://www.jenwilletts.com/searchaction2.php I entered the name Hicks into the search box and found references to James Hicks re the abduction of the Slater lass - Entered "Woodlands" and found 2 refs, from the second, it appears that the property may have been in the Hexham district, near Newcastle and on the Hunter R. near the junction of the Pacific and New England highways. http://www.jenwilletts.com/earlysettler4.htm This page has 5 maps of the Hunter region, this is a map of the Williams R. c 1837 perhaps too early but still of interest. It is a pleasant drive from Maitland to Paterson, a small township on the Williams R. which passes by many of the old properties in the district. There is an active and informative Historical Society and Museum in the old courthouse, open from 1pm on Sundays where information on the places and people mentioned may be found http://www.tocal.com/homestead/museum/ Dungog information at http://www.dungog.nsw.gov.au/about/1003/1010.html Hope this helps, Marje

    1. [HV] James Hicks & the Slater Family c1848
    2. Chris Ralph
    3. Hello Listers, My 3rd great grandfather James HICKS was transported to NSW in 1830. Briefly, his story is as follows: He was convicted of stealing lambs at Hertford Quarter Sessions in England in 1829, and was sentenced to death. This penalty was within days commuted to transportation to NSW for life. He was at the time married and was the father of one infant son. His wife Mary was expecting a second child, who was born as he was detained on a prison hulk awaiting transportation. That expected child was my 2nd great grandfather. Both James & Mary HICKS were illiterate, so it is unlikely that they were able to communicate after his departure from English shores. His family was never reunited with him in Australia, and no recollection of this traumatic episode was passed down the generations. I discovered these sad details only in recent years. Once landed in NSW in May 1830, James was assigned to work on Edward Sparke's estate. I understand that this was located at Woodberry and Woodlands in the Lower Hunter Valley. In 1839 James was granted a ticket of leave in the Maitland district. In 1845 he was permitted to change this to the Dungog district. By 1848 he had ended up working for a small settler on the Williams River, named James Slater. It was at that point that he got himself into further trouble when he abducted Slater's teenage daughter, the consequence of which was that he served a year in Maitland Gaol. A second ticket of leave was granted to him in 1851, when he was to remain in the Illawarra district. I have no further clear history following the issue of that document. However, I see that there was a James HICKS living back in Dungog in 1866 and 1872, who may or may not have been my ancestor. My purpose in offering this account is that I have an opportunity to visit these areas for just two days later this month, flying out from England on 17th September. I hope to spend 19th-21st September looking around the places where my 3rd great grandfather lived out the second part of his life. In order to make the most of this opportunity, it would be helpful if anyone could offer advice or information on the following questions which I have: 1. Where on the Williams River was James Slater and his family living in 1848? Is there any way of discovering this from local directories of the time? The only mention I have in the newspaper report says: "It appeared from the evidence of James Slater and Susannah Slater that Slater was a small settler living on the William River, and that in 1848 the prisoner was working and living with him for a short time". 2. There are a couple of references from James Hicks' ticket of leave, and I wonder where I should go to follow up these references, which are 50/3078 and 51/1815. 3. Does anyone have any ideas just where I might locate the old Sparke estate at Woodberry and Woodlands in the Lower Hunter Valley? 4. Apart from Dungog and Maitland and the Sparke estate, is there anywhere else you would recommend I try to see during my visit? Or is there anything else I might realistically do to prepare for my visit during the next two weeks? Many thanks for any ideas. >From a grey, wet day in England, Chris Ralph

    3. Maree, did you check the John DUNN families in the BDMs for one who had children Mary Ann *and* Robert, because it looks like Robert could have been her brother? The births of children to John DUNNs would give you an idea of which might be the right one because you could get an idea from the birth area which might be the correct family. According to Nick Vine Hall's "Parish Registers In Australia" The St Matthew's Marriages 1835-1892 are held on film/fiche at SAG, so you may get lucky if you are able to check these. The originals might have the father's occupation and should have had the mother's name. Unless Murphy was doing the recording. 3. Hoping someone can help I have a marriage certificate for my gg grandparents who were married 3rd January 1870 at St Matthews Catholic church, Windsor. There names were Edwin Carberry and Mary Ann Dunn. The gg grandmother was under 21 and her father John gave consent. The witnesses were Robert Dunn and Eliza Jane Stahl. My problem is there are no other names of parents on this certificate and when I looked on NSW BDM I found lots of John Dunn's with a few possibilities. Would the church records have the parents names and occupations recorded? If so are the church records with the said named church or are the records kept somewhere else? Thank you Maree Elliott Scone
