    3. Dear Marjorie, I would love a copy of William Wilson's letter, it would give me an idea of what conditions were like at sea at that time. My great grandmother Elizabeth Libertus ENGLISH was born on board the barque "Libertas" in 1855 during her family's emigration to Australia. The ship departed London on 8 March and arrived on 28 June in Newcastle. Elizabeth's family settled in Maitland for six or seven years before relocating to Sydney. As you can see the family must have had a memorable trip to have given their new daughter such a middle name, though they did alter the spelling slightly, and much to my mother's embarassment she inherited "Libertus" as a middle name. Thank you again for your kind offer to the list. Regards, Diane Sydney NSW -----Original Message----- From: aus-nsw-hunter-valley-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:aus-nsw-hunter-valley-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Marjorie Robinson Sent: Tuesday, 17 October 2006 1:50 AM To: AUS-NSW-Hunter-Valley-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [HV] William Wilson Hello there! Many years ago I was given a copy of a letter written by William Wilson to his parents in England. The letter is dated January 6th 1855 and recounts his voyage to Australia. The address he gives is the Maitland Hotel, Maitland. William was a stone mason and I think that he was the same William, aged 25, who came over on the Kate in 1854. If the letter would be of interest to anyone I would be pleased to forward a copy. 3. Hi listers, I am researching my GG Grandfather Joseph Welch/Welsh born about 1820 Ireland. His 1st marriage was to Bridget Daley in 1845 in Sydney. She died in 1847. He then married Hannan King (my gg grandmother) in 1852 in Eldon Nsw, and had 12 children with her. Hannah parents were Charles & Sarah King who had come to Australia from England in 1844 with their family, and settled in the Eldon area. Is there any other lister who is researching this family? 3. Hi Listers, I am looking for any information out there about James LYNCHEY (or variants thereof) who was my GG grandmother's brother. James was born in Ireland C 1820 and was convicted on the Isle of Man in 1833. He arrived in Sydney on the Mary Ann in 1835. His Ticket of Leave # is 44/1537 issued at Muswellbrook in January 1844 when he would have been about 27 years of age. The ToL stated that he was to remain in the Moreton Bay District. This seems quite a distance away but may have been part of the same administrative district in the 1840's. Any assistance would be most appreciated. Cheers Peter Strauss Melbourne

    3. We have recently changed our email server, going on broadband, so would like to repost our interests in both The Hunter Valley and New England areas where many of these families were located from the mid 1820's to well into the 1900's. Some of their descendants are still located in the New England area. Joseph Broadbent HOLMES and his wife Harriet arrived 1842 and took up 2000+ acres of land between Cessnock and Branxton which he named "The Wilderness" hence Wilderness Road. Rev. Alfred GLENNIE. arrived 1828. James GLENNIE arrived 1824, took up 2000+ acres to the North of Singleton which he named "Dulwich" after his home town in England. Glennie's Creek is named after him. Dr. Henry GLENNIE arrived C1832 and settled in Singleton where he remained until his death in 1880. Also George WYNDHAM who arrived c1828 and established "Dalwood". The HOLMES, GLENNIES and WYNDHAMS were very close and there were a number of marriage between their descendants. The HOLMES" eldest son married the eldest daughter of Alfred GLENNIE. They lived on "Yallaroi" station where Maxwell Holmes, was for many years, manager. (Maxwell was my great grandfather). Would very much like to hear from anyone who may be connected. 2. josee
    3. I was wondering if anyone had any of the mentioned families in their tree? I had searched everywhere for my HOWE family, only to find out that to start with it was HAUKES, HOUGH, HAIG. My Edward& Margaret came from Shannagolden, County Limerick. Ireland. Lord & Lady Monteagle helped them immigrate to Australia. I found all this out from the books Poverty to Promise & another book, West Limerick Families abroad. My great- great grandfather Edward was born c.1911 Shannagolden Limerick Ireland, married 1838 Margaret MCCARTHY at Shannagolden Limerick Ireland. They immigrated to Australia aboard the "Aliquis" in1837 with Margaret's sister Mary MCCARTHY, she married 1851 ? DOHERTY. Later Margaret's sisters Catherine & Johanna MCCARTHY arrived in Victoria aboard the " Lady Peel" 1848. I do not know what happened to Catherine but Johanna married 24 May 1850 Cornelius IRWIN at Roman Catholic West Maitland. Margaret & Edward HAUKES, HOWE ,HAIG HOUGH had six children. Some surnames that might be connected to this family- Patrick married Mary Casey 1857 Raymond Terrace. Edward married Mary Ann Gimbert 12 Jan 1869 Wesleyan Church, Murrurundi. Edward is my line. From Edward the surname was spelt HOWE Edward died 9 Mar 1846 Raymond Terrace & he is buried at Raymond Terrace. Margaret married Timothy HOOLEY 9 Nov 1846 Raymond Terrace. They had seven children. Timothy died 1877 Patrick Plains & Margaret died 1889 Newcastle. . Some of the families that might be connected- Mary married Alexander COPELAND 1867 Patrick Plains. Elizabeth married Albert NASH1902 Petersham. Daniel married Catherine CARLON 1882 Newcastle. There seems to be a few HOUGH families at Raymond Terrce but Edward does'nt seemed connected to them. I would love to hear from any-one who had connections with this family as they seemed to have scattered. josee

    1. [HV] re Robert Gorton
    2. Judith Dumbrell
    3. Hello Donna, Don't know if you've seen the small article that was in the book called A Souvenir of Stroud, which I purchased in 2001. Gorton.-The first people bearing the name of Gorton to arrive in this country from Berkshire England, were two brothers, Joe and George. George settled in Stroud, and for very many years was veterinary surgeon for the A.A. Co. He was noted for his high class breed of horses and cattle. Afterwards he moved to Dungog. He had a family of five sons and one daughter. Three sons, John, Joseph and George, were in partnership for some years on Tibrlc and Coniac stations. His daughter Charlotte was afterwards Mrs. Crispin. John was born in 1833 and died in 1904. He was the first Gorton to settle at Washpool; his property was known as "Glenholme Estate". The old homestead and part of the property is now owned by Mr. George Gorton, one of his sons. He had a family seven in number: William, Joe, George, Chris., Sedge, Les., and Mary (now Mrs. Benjamin). Mr. Robert James Gorton, of Briton Court, who has purchased "Hollydean." until his departure from Stroud, the residence of Dr. Orford, is a son of Joseph Gorton. With the name of Gorton is associated all the best and most high class breeds of Shorthorn and Durham cattle. "Gortons" were good judges of other people's cattle as well as their own, and Mr. George Gorton was a particularly noted stock judge. The electoral roll shows more Gortons than I really am able to mention here. This is one of the most popular, as well as best known families in the district. Also this mention of PRICE Price.-Edward Price was a great church man. He married Ann, a daughter of the late William Flannery. He is buried in the cemetery of St. John. They had Samuel, William, and Clarence as sons, and their daughters were Mrs. Edwin Gorton, Mrs. Allen Farley, Mrs. Robert Ford, Mrs. Donald Lewis and Miss Lilian Price. Miss Laura Price died some time ago. There are also various mentions of Benjamin Marsh and various Gortons in the Williams River Book - contact me offlist if you don't have them.

    3. Greetings i am trying to make contact with anyone who has any knowledge about a irish convict called Michael Power , Earl of St Vincent 1818 . He moved to the Maitland area in 1831 and married a Helen /Ellen dott in 1833 . Helens death certificate said they had 15 children although i can only find John , Michael , Bridget , Ellen Nicholas , James and William . It is probably that some of the kids took of the name of Helens new husband when Michael passsed away or they died very young . Michael died at Fourmile creek in 1854 and a year later Ellen married a James Rush and moved to the Gwydir area. My problem is that Michael's death certificate didnt list any children or parents which makes irish research nearly impossible given Power is the commonest surname in County Waterford . I am looking for anyone who has Power in their family tree in the Maitland area as i am quite confident all the families are related in that area. I am also interested in anyone who has heard of the name James Pathey in the Millers forest area in the 1850s where he was working as a groom. Anyone with knowledge of that surname or something similar would be appreciated . I am also interestedin making contact who i havenot already spoken to regarding the Jory, Madden , Avard , Grant families . thanks for your time , regards Paul --------------------------------- Talk is cheap.
