Hi Everyone, Just one further thought on the WICKS family of Merriwa. Some years ago I did form WICKS-AUS as a way for the multitude of descendants of this family to communicate. If we get too talkative for the Hunter-Valley people, you might like to wander over to http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/surname/w/wicks.html#WICKS-AUS Linda http://kapana.customer.netspace.net.au/wicks.html
Hi Rob, I have Stanley Albert Wicks married Gloria May Bird 1951 Scone NSW His parents were Henry Albert Wicks and Robina May Holman. My husband Ken's grandmother was a Bird from Scone NSW. Also other connections to Pittman, Hayward and Nowland. Any connection with your Wicks. Hellllllllo. Rob - I thought [sic] means "such as it is written" (even if it looks wrong). In other words - have I written my name somewhere as Farraclough???? Hmmm - silly me. :) The website is http://kapana.customer.netspace.net.au/wicks.html as a jumping off point. So I have been nattering to Maree offlist And not a lot of time to work on family history at the minute - couple of campfires going up the road. Hi Would like to connect with an HINTON researchers in the Hunter Valley. Regards Jane and Doug Hinton Canberra
Please change my format to digest thank you Robin Osborne-Smith
Dear Listers Since Rootsweb changed the software used for their mailing lists digest subscribers can get 2 formats of messages (A digest is the name given to blocks of messages in one download ) These now come in a single, to my mind unwieldy, list of messages or in a very similar format as before as little file attachments. I can changed this single list to little file attachments so to just single messages . All you need do is email me and say you'd like to change over This DOES NOT apply to subscribers who receive single messages
I come down fromthe Merriwa Wicks family and have their info on paper, probably can't get anything until the new year, have a website & a lady that researched the family ( Linda Farraclough. sic), will try to find it all after the Xmas period. Hi Maree and Marg, I just did a Google search and came up with this site: http://kapana.customer.netspace.net.au/sargeant-desc.html Here's a snippet from the website, which would suggest the date should be 1839. ...."Georgiana (Hannah) Sargeant. She was christened on 12 April 1812 at Kingswood and married Henry Wicks, son of Stephen Wicks and Sarah Hable, circa 1830 in Gloucestershire. On 2 September 1839 she arrived in Sydney, per the Bussorah Merchant with Henry and her family. She died on 8 June 1877 at Pyrmont, Sydney, NSW, at age 65." Hope this helps you, Juliette

Hi Maree You have the date wrong .......... ! In 1831 this ship transported convicts from Dublin to Sydney arriving 14 Dec 1831 as Bussorah Merchant 3 . Lesley Umbel has this date in her Claim a Convict web site and is also quoted in an old index I have on fiche - Free passengers and Crew of convict ships 1830 -1840 . Alas no Henry WICKS in these fiche . Also checked a couple of Col secs indexes 1831 + and PO Dirs 1834 , 1835 and 1839 and no ref to any Henry WICKS ?? Does his death cert offer any clue as to length of time resident ? Was he living in Merriwa by Oct 1852 ? Bye MargM Hunter Valley List Admin
According to family legend Henry Wicks and his wife Hannah arrived in Sydney from England as assisted emigrants on 3 Sept 1831 on the Bussorah Merchant. I have tried shipping records at State records but unable to find anything that coincides with dates etc. Does anyone have any ideas how I can validate this claim? Thanks Maree Elliott
Dear Listers If I want to check some info in the national archives site my computer usually goes direct to the record search page. It wouldnt do this just now so I went manually to their main page first . Was about to click on record search when 'find of the month' caught my eye http://naa.gov.au/about_us/find-of-month/previous_finds.html Are some wonderful twidderly bits here ............... I loved the one about the 3yo who buried his fathers war service medal in the garden in the hope of growing a poppy :-)) Enjoy ! There are a few Torryburns around, but I only know of the New England one and of course the Scotland original township. If someone has the Lands Department historic maps for the area and you know what county or parish, or near what town your property is, the person might be able to look up the maps for you and see who the land holder was. Other than that, ask the Lands Department themselves by visiting your nearest branch, or local Government body. Just suggestions. Lynette Lynette Begg P.O.
