Hi Jenny & Marie These two Harrigans were definitely buried at Lochinvar Roman Catholic Cemetery as I have their death certificates. Not to worry, they must have been buried without headstones - (Which I find surprising, as they had a large number of descendants). I know about all the Branxton Harrigan burials - thanks anyway! I was there in November and took loads of photos - however I didn't even know about the Lochinvar Cemetery until I got the certificates and also found out that other O'Neill ancestors were buried there (Catherine Harrigan's parents Patrick & Esther O'Neill) Many thanks Cathy Geelong Vic On Fri, 2007-02-09 at 08:32 +1100, Jenny McCarthy wrote: > I have Lochinvar Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery and the Harrigans do not > appear > > > ..· ´¨¨)) -:¦:- > ¸.·´ .·´¨¨)) > ((¸¸.·´ ..·´ -:¦:- > -:¦:- ((¸¸.·´*.` > Jenny McCarthy > Brightwaters N.S.W. > on beautiful Lake Macquarie
Hi List! Does anyone have the cemetery headstone listing for Lochinvar Cemetery? If so, would they mind doing a look up on John & Catherine HARRIGAN. John died in 1900 and Catherine in 1883. Hello Barbara Thanks for replying. I wonder if you could look at your CD and tell me in there is a Union Inn Hotel. I think it would have been in the Clarencetown, Dungog, Seaham area. regards Judy
Hi Maria & List I do find this interesting - thank you. It actually sheds new light on a family member Bernard Fitzsimmons (if it is the same one). I have records of Bernard coming out to Australia as an assisted immigrant with his family in 1856 - but maybe he was here before! His brothers Michael & Peter were both transported in 1831. There is a gap in the births of Bernard's children (born in England) between 1843 and 1848- this "transportation" then becomes a definite possibility as there is no other person of this name dying in the colony after this time frame. Hi List Just picked up on this thread I have a convict Thomas Grant - Ship Almorah in 1820 received his COF in 1827. In 1834 he is listed as a Publican - Inn "Sign of the settlers Arms" of Stoney Creek This is mentioned in the Maitland Bench Books where is he is found guilty of a crime and sentenced to a further 7 years at Morton Bay I have been to the state archives and could not find any mention of a Publicans Licence issued and have not been able to find out what happened to the Inn after his conviction. I have wondered as a former convict where he was able to find finance to open such a place. He is also mentioned in the Sydney gazette as a Publican from Maitland, so I have presumed Stoney Creek was somewhere near West Maitland. regard Faye

Thanks Ian, it would appear that Baptisms, Marriages etc that are marked Houghton actually took place in Paterson. ..· ´¨¨)) -:¦:- ¸.·´ .·´¨¨)) ((¸¸.·´ ..·´ -:¦:- -:¦:- ((¸¸.·´*.` Jenny McCarthy Brightwaters N.S.W. on beautiful Lake Macquarie

Hello Wendy, The Anglican [C. of E.] Church Registers for the Newcastle Diocese [which includes Houghton]--up to 1900--are with the Auchmuty ? Library at Newcastle Uni. on film. I would think the Newcastle Library would also have a copy. This may help. You mentioned that "The LTO and LPI have Parish maps on line. May I have the URL please. Bennie.
Hi Jenny and List Paterson was in the Parish of Houghton - therefore some priests from the Church Of England would often write the actual parish down and not the town. Especially if a few miles away from the nearest settlement. However a good reference to check your Anglican parishes in the Newcastle region is the University of Newcastle site. http://www.newcastle.edu.au/service/archives/anglicandiocese/index/html (i hope i copied that right) This gives an index to registers held and the various parishes and towns included. You will note Paterson went from the Parish of Houghton 1839 to 1870 to the Parish of Gresford after that. But they also have a section for Paterson. I have a classic in 1855 - were the baptism is noted as the Parish of Murrumbidgee and that's it - absolutely no help whatsoever in giving me a location. Regards Garry Sanders Kariong, NSW
Jenny, The Parish of Houghton still exists & is part of the County of Durham. Houghton is marked on today's topographical maps North West of the town of Paterson.,i.e. West & South of the Paterson River as it extends Northwards from the town. You can view it's position & extent on the NSW Dept of Lands Website (Historical & Parish maps). Thanks to all who replied re the marriage at the Church of England, Houghton. It is obviously Paterson where they were married, I am at a loss to understand why this one marriage is listed as Houghton when many others for that family are shown as Paterson. ..· ´¨¨)) -:¦:- ¸.·´ .·´¨¨)) ((¸¸.·´ ..·´ -:¦:- -:¦:- ((¸¸.·´*.` Jenny McCarthy Brightwaters N.S.W. on beautiful Lake Macquarie
Hi Garry, The town of Paterson is IN THE Parish of Houghton. On average a Parish covers about 40 square miles or about 25,600 acres! (or roughly 10,360 hectares)* * The town of Paterson is not that big. There is no County Houghton in NSW, maybe you meant the Parish of Houghton. Hi Jenny and List According to some notes - i took down some time ago. The Parish of Houghton within the County of Durham is now the town of Paterson. However from two baptisms I have recorded from the County of Houghton, the first in 1845, my ancestors Richard And Elizabeth Sawyer were living in Gresford and the second in 1847 they were working on the Norwood Estate of Mr Gibbes, Paterson River. Hope this helps Garry Sanders Kariong, NSW
Hi Jenny, Houghton is a Parish in the County of Durham, Land District of Maitland, Shire of Bolwarra. The Parish of Houghton is bounded on the North West side by the Paterson River. The towns of Vacy and Paterson are in the Parish of Houghton. I hope this helps Regards Helen NSW Lands Records specialist On 02/02/07, Jenny McCarthy <bardensbay@exemail.com.au> wrote: > > I have found a marriage at the Church of England Church, Houghton, Can > anyone tell me where that was? > > > ..· ´¨¨)) -:¦:- > ¸.·´ .·´¨¨)) > ((¸¸.·´ ..·´ -:¦:- > -:¦:- ((¸¸.·´*.` > Jenny McCarthy > Brightwaters N.S.W. > on beautiful Lake Macquarie > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > AUS-NSW-HUNTER-VALLEY-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' > without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message >
