    3. Hi Kaye and List Just saw this entry and was wondering if you could check two names for me on your list. I am trying to find out as much as I can about these two men. 1. Johan (John) Charles MELEN or MELAN arrived on the "Chatham" in 1850 (Swedish) and continued to stay in the Stockton Newcastle area on 'boats' of some sort until a bad accident with a log on a boat. 2. Gustaf Arvid "SMITH" (probably englacised). Born Sweden. On his Naturalization papers on 22 December 1885 it stated he arrived on "San" "St" or Saint" JAMES. The only reference I can find about a "St James" vessel was wrecked in 1848, so obviously not that one. He also lived and worked on vessels in the area at least until 1879 and apparently worked on ships that went to America and England (according to his grand-daughter). He would have arrived in Australia around 1876 according to his Death Certificate. If anyone can give me a clue how to find out more about the arrival of these two men I would be grateful. I think that they both must have been "seamen" and came to Australia as crew. Cannot find any record of "Chatham" either. A relative told me that this was the ship he arrived on as a 17 year old in 1850.
